Edsall, MacPhail commit to Babe's Bash on Feb. 11
New Maryland football coach Randy Edsall and Orioles president Andy MacPhail will attend the annual Babe's Birthday Bash on Feb. 11. The event, which will run from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards, will celebrate the 116th anniversary of Ruth's birth in Baltimore on Feb. 6, 1895. At the Bash, the Babe Ruth Museum will present its 2011 Community Service Award to the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation. and softball-themed programs to help build character and teach life lessons to disadvantaged youth residing in America's most distressed communities. Free throws in final second beat Towson women, 58-56
Deanna Kerkhof led Northeastern with a team-best 15 points and made a pair of free throws with 0.4 of a second left to lift the host Huskies (8-11, 3-5 Colonial Athletic Association) to a 58-56 win over Towson (7-12, 1-7) on Thursday night. Simona Petronyte scored 15 for the Tigers.
Division III women: Stephanie Fong had a career-high 17 points and host Johns Hopkins (15-3, 12-2 Centennial Conference) overcame poor first-half shooting to win, 57-49, over Franklin & Marshall (10-8, 8-5). The Blue Jays, who have won six straight, managed only seven points in the first 14 minutes. … Stephanie Straka scored 16 points to help host Frostburg State (9-10, 6-4 Capital Athletic Conference) earn a 68-54 victory against York (9-9, 6-4). … Host Washington College (7-10, 5-7 Centennial) made four free throws in the closing 40 seconds to win, 45-41, over Ursinus (11-6, 8-5). Meghan Tait scored 16 points and Sally O'Donnell 15 for the Shorewomen.
Division III men: Kevin Breslin had 19 points and the Washington College bench supplied half the scoring as the Shoremen (6-12, 5-6 Centennial Conference) earned an 88-79 win over Ursinus (7-11, 4-7). With 19 minutes left in the game, Washington went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. … Visiting Franklin & Marshall (14-4, 9-2 Centennial) took the lead for good with 11 minutes left and earned an 86-55 win over Johns Hopkins (4-14, 2-9). John Alberici … Brian Anderson scored a game-high 27 points, but host Frostburg State (7-12, 2-8 CAC) fell, 101-90, in overtime to York (13-6, 7-3).
Postponements: Because of inclement weather, four area colleges postponed Thursday games. Host Bowie State will play Lincoln (Pa.) on Sunday, with the women at 2 p.m. and men at 4p.m. On Monday, the McDaniel men will host Swarthmore at 7:30 p.m. and Stevenson will travel to Salisbury, with the women at 6 p.m. and men at 8 p.m. College of Notre Dame will face Rosemont on Feb. 7.

Ex-United coach Onalfo will be Galaxy assistant
Former D.C. United coach Curt Onalfo has been hired as an assistant coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy. Onalfo, who played 13 Major League Soccer games for the Galaxy in 1996, will coach the Los Angeles reserve team. He will be reunited with Bruce Arena, a former United coach who hired Onalfo as an assistant with the U.S. national team from 2003 to 2006.
NBA: Washington Wizards rookie guard John Wall is one of eight possible participants who will join New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul in the Skills Challenge on Feb.19 in Los Angeles. Fans can vote on four of the five participants at NBA.com/chooseyoursquad.
Women's college honors: UMES junior Cynthia Anais, who set an 800-meter school record of 2 minutes, 7.95 seconds, was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Female Track and Field Athlete of the Week. … UMES junior Paula Vilas was named MEAC Bowler of the Week.
