After his All-Metro freshman year, Patterson guard Aquille Carr continues to dazzle on the basketball court as a sophomore. But this season, he is doing it with more talent around him.
That was again apparent Saturday night at the 15th annual Basketball Academy at Coppin State, where the No.1 Clippers were both complete and overwhelming in their 88-56 win over North Carolina's Rocky Mount Prep.
Carr finished with 34 points, junior guard Myrek Lee-Fowlkes added 24 and senior guard Rickey Meekins contributed a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Clippers improved to 12-1 on the season.
Eight points from Carr late in the second quarter helped build a 36-28 halftime lead that steadily climbed as the Clippers' athleticism, balanced offense and tight defense proved too much for the Jaguars.
The Clippers were looking forward to the challenge of playing on a big college floor in front of a big crowd and responded with two wins at Coppin, also defeating No. 3 Milford Mill on Thursday.
"It was a good game tonight; we played well and handled everything real well," Carr said. "I'm feeling much better because I don't have as much stress on me this season, knowing I can depend on my teammates much more."
No. 5 Edmondson 70, Aberdeen 60: Senior guard Kavon Pyatt had the tournament's finest individual performance, pouring in 40 points to lead the Red Storm (10-1) past Aberdeen. He made eight 3-pointers. Senior forward Brian Ellison also reached double figures for the Red Storm with 11 points, while the Eagles (8-5) got a team-high 17 points from junior guard Gerrae Williams.
No. 10 Lake Clifton 71, No. 15 Owings Mills 50: Leading 32-25 at the half, the Lakers (10-2) outscored the Eagles by a 22-10 margin in the decisive third quarter to win going away. Senior forward Trae Summers led four Lakers in double figures with 25 points The Eagles, who have now lost two straight after a 13-0 start, got 16 points from junior guard Carjahn Jenkins.
No. 8 Mount St. Joseph 58, St. Paul's 55: In a fast-paced game, the visiting Gaels (17-5) went 3-for-4 from the line in the closing two minutes to secure the win. The Crusaders tied the game midway through the fourth quarter before Mount St. Joseph pulled away. Kameron Williams had a game-high 16 points for the Gaels.
