Archbishop Spalding did some multi-tasking Saturday night. The top-ranked Cavaliers simultaneously won a tournament and gained some revenge.
Spalding lost to DeMatha in the finals of last year's Centennial Duals, but the Cavaliers turned the tables in this season's finale, winning four of the first five matches en route to a 48-16 victory.
Spalding and DeMatha, ranked No. 5 by The Washington Post, each won seven matches with little trouble before meeting up in the finals for the second straight year.
The Cavaliers had their eye on this match from the start. They dropped a 40-29 decision to the Stags last year in a match that went down to the final bout, during which Spalding's Brady Gaynor suffered a broken arm, lost by injury default and was out the rest of the season.
"We wanted to come back here and make a statement," said Spalding coach Mike Laidley. "[Last year] didn't sit well with us."
In the finals, the Cavaliers got four pins and a technical fall, were aggressive from start to finish and never trailed. .
"I think our kids really wrestled well," Laidley said.
K.K. Smith (189 pounds) began the match with a pin of Shane Cockerille at 3:17. After DeMatha's Dylan Devin won a major decision at 215, the Cavaliers reeled off three straight victories for an 18-4 edge that the Stags couldn't bounce back from.
Malik Johnson (285) began the roll by pinning Kyle Jones in just 48 seconds, and Mike Still (103) and Cole Gallagher (112) won decisions after that. Still scored an 8-4 victory over Shane Wilson, and Gallagher beat Ben Prada, 6-3.
Logan Breitenbach (125) scored a technical fall over D'Andre Wallace, and Cole Graves (130) followed by pinning Jon Turcotte in just 28 seconds. After Gaynor fell to Tito Onyekweli (135), the Cavaliers rebounded to clinch the match.
Will Switzer (140) beat Kevin Lashley, 11-2, and Charlie Lynch (145) rolled to a 19-4 rout of Josh Cuoto for a 33-10 lead. That wrapped up the match. Connor Lane (152, pin) and D.J. Smith (171, major decision) won two of the last three matches.
"We were looking to come back and take it," said Lane. "We kind of wanted to prove that we deserved being ranked No. 1."
The Cavaliers hope to use the momentum from this match for their battle at No. 2 McDonogh Wednesday. Lane said Spalding is definitely looking forward to that.
"I think we're all psyched up for the McDonogh match," Lane said.
South River beat Mount Hebron, 39-33, in the consolation finals when Mike Santini (171) scored a pin over Mike Sutton in the final match with the score even at 33.
