Nathan Kraisser stood a few feet from the crowd, just minutes after winning the 119-pound division of Mount Mat Madness VIII Saturday night at CCBC- Catonsville. The junior from Centennial thought about the meaning of beating Dom Malone from Wyoming Seminary (Pa.), someone who'd handed him tough losses in this tournament the past two years.
After pondering the question for a few moments, Kraisser simply smiled.
"That will satisfy me for one or two days," he said. "Then I'll find something else to [try for]."
Kraisser lost to Malone in the finals last year and the semifinals in 2009. But Kraisser won this time, using a third-period takedown to pull out a tough 3-1 victory over Malone in their title match. He later was named the tournament's top wrestler.
"This felt great, and it's a big win for me," Kraisser said. "I finally got him back."
Malone beat Kraisser 3-1 in each of the past two tournaments. That's the big reason why Kraisser dropped from his normal weight of 125 down to 119 — he wanted another shot at Malone.
Kraisser already has won two state, region and Howard County titles. He's 16-0 this season and 91-3 in his career.
Malone handed him two of those losses, but Kraisser finally ended up on the winning side.
Kraisser said he's going to go back to 125 after this tournament
Brady Massaro of Mount St. Joe earned his 100th career victory with his 3-1 decision over Kevin Johnson from Forest Park (Va.) in the 160-pound final. Massaro's takedown late in the third period gave him the title.
This was the second time Massaro beat Johnson this season, scoring a 10-7 victory earlier.
"It definitely gives me some confidence," said Massaro, now 20-5 this season. "Getting my 100th win is very exciting, especially in this atmosphere."
Loyola's Mike Zito (140) and Mathew Miller from John Carroll (171) were the only other local wrestlers to make the finals. But both lost by decision. Nick Lospinoso handed Zito a 7-2 loss, and Miller dropped a 2-1 decision to Bubba Scheffel from Southern-Garrett in their title match.
The out-of-state teams dominated this event. Wyoming Seminary (Pa.) won for the third straight year, taking a huge lead into the finals and finishing with 226.5 points to beat Caesar Rodney out of Delaware.
McDonogh was the best local team, finishing tied for eighth with 104 points, even though the Eagles didn't get any wrestlers into the final round.
