2011 schedule to feature eight bowl teams from this season

Navy announced Friday its 2011 football schedule, which will include five games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, as well as the annual Army-Navy game, to be played at FedEx Field in Landover. Navy will face eight teams that played in a bowl game in 2010 and a Delaware team that lost the FCS national championship Friday against Eastern Washington, 20-19. If the Mids reach six wins, they will play an opponent from the Atlantic Coast Conference in the Military Bowl (date TBA). Season tickets ($190) will go on sale Feb. 2 at navysports.com, 800-US4-NAVY and the Ricketts Hall box office.

Terps' Meharg named national Coach of the Year for 8th time

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association has announced that Maryland coach Missy Meharg is its Division I Coach of the Year for an unprecedented eighth time. Meharg led the Terrapins to their seventh national championship in 2010, going 23-1 on the year. Maryland also claimed its ninth and third straight ACC tournament title as part of a season-ending 15-game winning streak. "This honor is a tribute to an amazing staff," Meharg said. "With Tjerk [Van Herwaarden] being here for four ACC titles and four NCAA championships, having Dina Rizzo back as an alum and an Olympian, as well as having Barb Weinberg, who is an Olympian as well, it is a really high-level staff that I know the players so heavily benefitted from. This is a team award and it's a real honor. "Missy is one of the great collegiate coaches in the nation — in field hockey or any sport," Maryland athletics director Kevin Anderson said. "Her student athletes perform at a championship level on the field, in the classroom and in our community. I congratulate Missy on this well-deserved recognition." Meharg was one of five finalists for the National Coach of the Year award, including Char Morrett (Penn State), Justine Sowry (Massachusetts), Karen Shelton (North Carolina) and Anne Wilkinson (Ohio State). Meharg's overall record of 413-102-9 gives her a winning percentage of .796, which is second among active coaches.

College basketball

Loyola rides hot shooting to 82-67 win over Manhattan

J'hared Hall and Robert Olson each connected on six of eight shots from 3-point range Friday as Loyola (6-8, 2-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) won, 82-67, over host Manhattan (2-12, 0-4). The Greyhounds ended the game on a 16-2 run over the final five minutes. Hall scored 17 of his career-high 23 points in the first half to keep Loyola within striking range after the Jaspers led, 30-18, with 5:14 remaining in the first half. Manhattan led 38-32 at the half.

More men's college basketball: Visiting Goucher (2-7, 0-2 Landmark Conference) made only five field goals in the second half, two in the final minute, and fell, 70-50, to Susquehanna (6-7, 2-0). Goucher went up 22-16 on a short-range jumper from Trae Lindsay (Patapsco) with 7:42 left in the first half. But the Gophers went 2-for-9 from the field, committed four turnovers and traled, 34-27, at the half. The Crusaders (6-7, 2-0) maintained a six-point lead throughout the second half. Colby Giacubeno (Perry Hall) led Goucher with 13 points.

Women's college basketball: Precious Kollock (Patapsco) tallied a team season-high 19 points, but visiting Goucher (0-10, 0-2 Landmark Conference) fell, 67-58, to Susquehanna (7-6, 2-0). Elizabeth von Ende backed up Kollock's effort with 15 points and Taquasia Lambert (Patapsco) added 13, but the Gophers couldn't prevent their losing streak from hitting double figures to start a season for the first time since 1988-89. Erika Barron had 20 points for the Crusaders, who led by as many as 20 points in the second half. … Cara Thompson (14 points) went 1-for-2 from the foul line with 10 seconds left to give McDaniel (2-8, 2-5 Centennial) a 53-50 win over host Ursinus (8-3, 5-2). The Bears were led by Diamond Lewis with 13 points. Whitney Snoops also had 14 for McDaniel. … Mount St. Mary's will play the 1,000th game in program history when it hosts Robert Morris at 3:30 p.m. today.

Boldin's charity golf tourney to be held April 14 in Fla.

Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin, along with the Anquan Boldin Foundation (Q81 Foundation), announced the foundation's fourth annual charity golf tournament, scheduled for April 14 at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The tournament will be played on the Champion Course — home of the PGA Honda Classic — and will feature Boldin as well as more than 15 other professional athletes. More Ravens: Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic announced it will provide comprehensive postgame coverage of the Ravens' AFC wild-card game at Kansas City with "Ravens Postgame Live" on Sunday at 4 p.m. "Ravens Postgame Live," which will be hosted by Russ Thaler, will provide an hour of extensive postgame news, analysis and opinion, including live interviews and press conferences from Kansas City. The program will feature analysis from former Ravens Brad Jackson and Kyle Richardson, who will join Thaler in the Comcast SportsNet studios, and reporting from Brent Harris, who will be at Arrowhead Stadium with news, updates and player interviews.

D.C. United: The club has re-signed midfielder Kurt Morsink and acquired defender Daniel Woolard. Morsink will return in 2011 for his second season with the club after arriving on March 5, 2010, from Sporting Kansas City (formerly the Kansas City Wizards). Woolard comes to Washington having spent a portion of the 2010 preseason on trial with United. The Texas native has three years of MLS experience with the Chicago Fire and most recently played for the Carolina Railhawks of the USSF Second Division. Additionally, United has reached an agreement with Pablo Hernandez to release the forward by mutual consent.
