Second-quarter run lifts Milford Mill boys past New Town, 64-47

The No. 5 Milford Mill boys basketball team put together a solid 32 minutes Thursday night at New Town, but the second quarter was something special.

With strong team defense at one end and balanced scoring at the other, the Millers went on a decisive 24-4 run to pull away for a 64-47 win over the Titans in Baltimore County play.

Six players scored in the pivotal stretch, which started with Nick Smoot's 3-pointer with 55 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Millers a 13-12 lead they would not relinquish. They went on to outscore the Titans 18-6 in the second quarter for a comfortable 34-18 halftime advantage.

Isaiah McCray, Duane Miller, Nick Smoot and Troy Parker each scored nine points, while Tevin Hanner and Katrell Myers finished with eight as Milford Mill improved to 7-1 this season.

The Titans, who got a game-high 18 points from Davonte Coleman, fell to 7-2.

Milford Mill coach Albert Holley was pleased with the effort, particularly at the defensive end.

"I think they're starting to get the hang of what we want to do defensively, so they're buying into the idea that you have to defend to win basketball games and they're exhibiting it out there on the court," he said.

Bel Air 67, Joppatowne 66: Desmond Hall went 2-for-2 from the foul line with four seconds left in a come-from-behind victory for the visiting Bobcats (7-2).

Bel Air trailed 64-48 with three minutes left but went on a 19-2 run to close the game out. Tyler Norcross had 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Bobcats.

Reginald F. Lewis 50, Maryland Academy of Technology & Math 49: Derrick Majett (23 points) scored to force overtime and converted a 3-point play with less than a minute in overtime to lift the visiting Falcons (2-4) over the Panthers.

Calvert Hall 77, Archbishop Spalding 63: The Cardinals (8-8) switched to a zone defense, forced turnovers and scored in transition to take the lead for good in the third quarter.

The host Cavaliers outrebounded and knocked down short-range jumpers in the first half to lead 30-29 at the break. Denzel Richardson led Calvert Hall with 28 points.

Broadneck 75, Urbana 68: Darnell Solomon had 28 points and 26rebounds for the host Bruins (9-1).

Southwestern 41, Institute of Business 29: Willie McDowell scored 13 points to lead the host Jaguars (3-5).
