3-year-old Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky is retired

Preakness champion Lookin At Lucky is looking at retirement. Coolmore purchased the 3-year-old colt from owner Mike Pegram and will stand him at Ashford Stud. Terms of the deal were not released, but Coolmore had Lookin At Lucky listed on its stallion register on its website Friday afternoon. Lookin At Lucky won nine races in 12 career starts for trainer Bob Baffert. He was named champion 2-year-old last fall after winning five of six races. He went off as the favorite in the Kentucky Derby but finished sixth after getting stuck on the rail. He bounced back with an easy win in the Preakness, then went on to triumph in the Haskell Invitational and the Indiana Derby. Lookin At Lucky ended his career with a fourth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs two weeks ago.

More Horse Racing: Laurel Park offers a special 11:05 a.m. post time Thursday with a nine-race card. Headlining the day will be the 23rd annual pie giveaway (pumpkin or apple) after the fifth race at both Laurel and its sister track, Pimlico Race Course. Free donuts with coffee or cider will also be available from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Laurel's terrace dining room will feature a traditional, home-style Thanksgiving buffet for $23. Friday will be "Guys Day Out" with free admission to Laurel Park's nine-race program for all men. The holiday week continues Saturday afternoon with a nine-race card. No. 1 Terps beat Ohio St., 3-1, advance to NCAA title game

The top-ranked Maryland field hockey team beat visiting No. 7 Ohio State, 3-1, on Friday night in the NCAA semifinals to secure a berth in Sunday's championship against No. 2 North Carolina in College Park. Senior Katie O'Donnell, who was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year earlier Friday, led the Terrapins (22-1) with her seventh career hat trick. Maryland advances to the NCAA championship game for the 10th time in school history. Six of its 10 appearances have been against North Carolina. The Terrapins beat the Tar Heels twice this season, including a 3-2 win Oct. 23 in College Park and a 5-2 win two weeks ago for the ACC championship in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Buckeyes took an early 1-0 lead, with a tip-in goal by Jena Cacciatore in the fifth minute off a rebound. O'Donnell scored the Terps' first goal off a penalty corner just under 10 minutes later, as freshman Ali McEvoy got the assist. O'Donnell inserted on the corner to sophomore Harriet Tibble, who passed it to McEvoy. O'Donnell took the pass and tipped it in for a backdoor shot. After Friday's performance, O'Donnell needs one goal to break the 100-goal mark and three to break the Atlantic Coast Conference career goals record. She already owns the ACC's career points and assists marks. Maryland has an all-time record of 94-9 at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex and is 17-1 at home in NCAA tournament games.

Salisbury edges Montclair St. in Doc Green Invitational

Chris McGrew (17 points) scored the final four points, including the game-winning layup with 28 seconds left, to lift Salisbury over Montclair State, 57-56, in the first round of the Doc Greene Invitational at Juniata. The Sea Gulls (1-1) advance to today's championship at 4 p.m. McGrew has tallied double-digit point totals in 10 straight contests for the Sea Gulls, dating to a Capital Athletic Conference contest against St. Mary's College on Jan. 23. McGrew also eclipsed the 300-career rebound mark, as he brought down eight rebounds in the victory, giving him 307 for his career. David Pearman turned in the first double-digit point performance of his career, as he scored 12 points and finished with three rebounds. Junior guards Mike Atkins, Devin Posey and Dylan Robeson each finished with six points in the victory. The Red Hawks (0-1) got a game-high 21 points from senior guard Rodney Freeney.

More men's college basketball: McDaniel survived a late rally by Washington College to hold on for a 70-68 win in a consolation semifinal game of the Pride of Maryland men's basketball tournament at Stevenson. McDaniel will play Johns Hopkins in the fifth-place game of the Pride of Maryland Tournament today at 4:15 p.m. The Shoremen will play Goucher in the seventh-place game at 2 p.m. … Center Tyler Snoots scored a game-high 23 points, but Hood (2-1) could not come away with a victory as St. Mary's (2-0) won, 77-60, advancing to the final round of the Pride of Maryland Tournament. … Even though Frostburg led by as many as 13 points in the second half, the Bobcats were able to hold off a Stevenson comeback for a 74-72 victory in the semifinals of the Pride of Maryland Tournament. … Matt Kelly led Johns Hopkins (1-1) in points (12) and rebounds (eight) as the Blue Jays beat Goucher (0-2), 57-50 in the consolation round of the Pride of Maryland Tournament.

Forward Briana White recorded her first-career double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds to guide visiting Hood past New England College, 60-51, in the opening round of the Gordon Tournament. Hood scored the first 16 points of the contest and never trailed. The win secured a spot in the championship game for the Blazers (2-0) against host Gordon, which beat Thomas College, 59-57. Hood kept the Pilgrims off the scoreboard for more than nine minutes and led by as many as 25 points in the opening stanza. The Blazers held a 36-19 lead at halftime. New England College (1-2) got no closer than seven in the second half as the Blazers maintained the upper hand.
