Top-seeded Terps to open NCAA tourney vs. UMass
Maryland (19-1) received a No. 1 seed for the NCAA tournament and will open at home against Massachusetts at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. American will play Connecticut at 2 p.m., with the winners meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday. Maryland has won six national championships, five under current coach Missy Meharg. The Terps have won 11 straight first-round games. Maryland beat UMass, the Atlantic 10 champion, 3-0, this season in College Park. Maryland also will host the semifinals Nov. 19 and finals Nov. 21.

Four from Maryland make All-ACC men's soccer 1st team
Maryland junior midfielder Matt Kassel, senior forward Jason Herrick, junior goalkeeper Zac MacMath and junior forward Casey Townsend were named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer first team. Sophomore defender Ethan White made the second team, and freshman midfielder Patrick Mullins was selected as Freshman of the Year. Second-seeded Maryland plays No. 7 seed Clemson today at noon in the ACC quarterfinals in Cary, N.C.
More men's soccer: Navy sophomore midfielder Michael Rakoczy made the All-Patriot League second team. … Johns Hopkins senior forward Scott Bukoski, junior defender Corey Adams and junior forward Sean Coleman made the All-Centennial Conference first team. Bukoski is the fifth player in conference history to make the first team four times.
Men's basketball: Navy shot just 30.2 percent from the field and host Texas outscored the Midshipmen by 22 points in the second half to earn an 83-52 victory in the season opener for both teams Monday night in the 2KSports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. Navy senior Mark Veazey had 14points, eight rebounds and a career-best five blocked shots before fouling out with 1:37 left. Mids junior Jordan Sugars had eight points and four rebounds, and seniors O.J. Avworo and Greg Brown each had six points.
Football: Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo is among 15 semifinalists for the first Joseph V. Paterno Coach of the Year Award, presented by the Maxwell Football Club. … Bowie State offensive lineman OgheneMaro Erhie and offensive lineman Leroy Williams made the All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association rookie team.
Swimming: Towson senior Meredith Budner was named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Women's Swimmer of the Week. … Loyola sophomore Brennan Morris of Lutherville was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week.
Volleyball: Frostburg State outside hitter Sarah Stephens was named Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was joined on the All-CAC first team by Bobcats junior Kylie Carrington. Others on the first team include Salisbury sophomore Chelsea Glowacki, St.Mary's senior Claire Kodan and Stevenson senior Alex Mercer (Liberty). The second team includes St. Mary's junior Gena Hlavinka, Frostburg senior Jamie Thomas (Reservoir) and Salisbury sophomore Carley Todd. The Bobcats' Peter Letourneau was named Coach of the Year.
