Annapolis Area Christian wins IAAM C Conference field hockey title

Regulation came and went in the field hockey battle between No. 1 seeded Annapolis Area Christian School and No. 6 seeded Key Saturday afternoon at Goucher College. But as overtime came and the sun began to disappear on a cold afternoon, the AACS players felt they had the advantage.

With 3:22 gone in overtime in the IAAM C-conference championship game, junior attacker Shelby Triolo put a rebound past Key School goalie Calley Roter (6 saves), for the 1-0 victory.

It was the first championship for the AACS Eagles (13-2) in the team's nine-year history.

"We'd been to overtime three times already this season and we'd practice overtime play all week," said Triolo, who joined with her team in a chant just before they went on the field for the extra period.

"You want it. You want it. You want it. Yeah! Let's go get it! Yeah!" they yelled.

Key (7-8-1) and AACS had several good chances to score in regulation, but neither could finish from in front of the goal and the game moved to overtime. There, Key had the early advantage, but could not beat AACS's goalie Emily Ferguson (6 saves) and then the Eagles took over.

Triolo carried the ball through traffic for a break-away, was stopped by Key senior defender Alex Wolfe, but then positioned herself perfectly for the put back of Meagan Ingley's shot off the ensuing penalty corner.

"We were very happy just to take the No. 1 seed into overtime," said Key coach Kristina Schrader. "We gave them a run for their money and my girls feel good about the way they played. Their heads are high."

AACS coach Sharon Wiley, thrilled to see the program she started finally grasp the championship trophy, was complimentary to the Key players, noting how close the regular season games were and how well both sides played here.

"The C Conference is so tight, so many people beating each other, when you get to overtime anything can happen," she said. "We have nine seniors on this team and we're thrilled to be celebrating."
