Boys Athlete of the Week: Mason Rivera, Hereford, cross country

Hereford senior Mason Rivera paced his cross country team to the first-ever perfect finish in the Baltimore County meet Saturday. The team took the top five spots to score the lowest possible total of 15 points. Rivera, the team captain, has a 3.5 grade-point average and is considering scholarship at a number of Division I schools, including Iowa State, George Mason and Appalachian State. He won the individual county title in 16:29.7. "Mason is a supremely dedicated kid," coach Jason Bowman said. "In addition to running over 500 miles this summer, he swam and biked countless miles. He runs before school. He trains on Sundays. This [effort] has made him a four-time county champion and two-time all-state performer." Rivera also runs track and is an Eagle Scout.

Also considered: Brandon Bayer, North Harford, football; Mike Glazer, Marriotts Ridge, soccer; Aaron Overton, Patterson, football; Michael Sauers, Archbishop Curley, soccer; Ian Thomas, Franklin, football; Anthony Williams, Archbishop Curley, football.
