NASCAR: Richard Childress, Clint Bowyer lose final appeal

Clint Bowyer and Richard Childress Racing lost their final appeal Tuesday on the penalties, including a 150-point deduction, they received following their victory in the Chase opener at New Hampshire. NASCAR had voted 3-0 against RCR's initial appeal last week.

Team owner Richard Childress insisted he had proof Bowyer's car was out of tolerance because of a push from a wrecker after running out of gas following the victory burnout.

But that proved pointless.

"After reviewing all the data, presentation and factors involved, I am ruling NASCAR was correct in its decision to levy penalties," said John Middlebrook, the National Stock Car Racing chief appellate officer who presided over the hearing.

Before the ruling was announced, Childress had asked for fans to put this incident behind them.

"Whatever it is I feel good about it," he said. "It was a very fair opportunity for us to state our case today. I would just like to ask race fans (to) put all this behind us."

Bonus boys: There is now a bit of extra incentive for Ford teams in the Chase. A lot of money. Jamie Allison, director of Ford North American Motorsports, is offering a bonus of $100,000 to any Ford team that wins a Chase race for the remainder of the season.

"I wanted to reward the entire team," Allison said. "We like to reward performance. I put a little reward out there to win, and sure enough it came through. I think it was more than that. It was a good team effort with good preparation. We were long overdue."

Allison already has had to dig deep in Ford's piggybank after Greg Biffle won on Sunday.

"You know, everybody asked us last week if we're out the Chase, have we given up, whatever the case was," Biffle said. "The 16 team will never give up. We're just going to approach each race like we did (Sunday): qualify the best we can … execute the best we can at the racetrack. We're going to go to California and do the same thing … Charlotte Motor Speedway …see what happens."

Asphalt, anyone? For the NASCAR fans who think they have everything in the way of memorabilia, how about a chunk of the Daytona International Speedway to complete your collection?

Jostens, in conjunction with the speedway, is offering "limited edition" memorabilia containing old track pieces from the track's repaving project.

One of the offerings is the "Genuine Track Piece of Legendary #3," an asphalt number about 4-by-5-inches with an official seal of authentication highlighted on a black base.
