3 from Morgan State among finalists for Black College Hall
The Black College Football Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2011 finalists Monday, and five of the 35 have ties to Maryland schools. Former Morgan State offensive lineman Roosevelt Brown, running back Leroy Kelly and coach Earl Banks are joined by offensive lineman Art Shell and running back Emerson Boozer, both of Maryland State College, now known as UMES. The Hall of Fame's second annual class will include 11 new members at the ceremony Feb.19 in Atlanta. A panel of journalists and football executives will select the inductees this month. Shell was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989 and was a key member of the Oakland Raiders' wins in Super Bowls XI and XV. Brown, a member of the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall in 1975 after spending 13 seasons with the New York Giants. He died in 2004. Kelly won NFL rushing titles in 1967 and 1968 with the Cleveland Browns and was a two-time NFL punt-return champion. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall in 1994. Banks spent 14 years as Morgan's coach, amassing an .839 win-loss percentage. He served as Morgan's athletic director from 1970 to 1983. Banks died in 1993. Boozer rushed for 2,537 yards and 22 touchdowns in college and started for the 1968 New York Jets team that beat the Colts in Super Bowl III. Other finalists include the late Steve McNair, a former Ravens quarterback, and former Colts wide receiver Willie Richardson.

Recruiting Report
John Carroll's McMillan to attend Central Conn. State
When it was time for Malcolm McMillan to pick a high school, the Harford County resident considered John Carroll's tradition and Patriots coach Tony Martin's penchant for producing Division I players. When Martin met McMillan at John Carroll's basketball camp for eighth-graders, he saw a "tough, physical" player who had all the makings of a future D-I prospect. On Saturday night, the Division I expectations of McMillan and Martin were met. McMillan, now a 6-foot, 185-pound senior point guard, committed to Central Connecticut State on a weekend visit to the school. He chose the Blue Devils over Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Mount St. Mary's, Saint Francis (Pa.) and UNC-Wilmington. The team is "always together and they're like a family," McMillan said. "They made me feel right at home." (For the rest of Matt Bracken's blog post, go to baltimoresun.com/recruiting report.)

Atholton's Schmitt honored after upset of River Hill
For guiding Atholton to an upset of No. 3 River Hill on Friday, coach Kyle Schmitt has been named Ravens High School Coach of the Week. The Raiders' 10-0 win ended a 49-game winning streak for the Hawks in Howard County play and broke a 13-game losing streak to River Hill, including a setback in last year's regional championship game. "It was a tremendous win," Schmitt said, "not only because of who we beat or the streaks we broke, but because of where we were in the season. It puts us right back in the middle of it." Atholton was 2-2 heading into the game.
