No. 1 Severna Park beats No. 5 Broadneck, 3-2, in two overtimes

Marissa Ballera scored her second goal of the game with 1:28 left in the second overtime to give No. 1 Severna Park a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Broadneck in an Anne Arundel County field hockey game Monday night.

Ballera and Madeline Ross scored in the first half to give visiting Severna Park (7-0, 5-0) a 2-0 lead. But the Falcons couldn't hold the lead as Kate Stengel scored two second-half goals for the Bruins (7-1, 4-1), and the game eventually went into overtime.

The game was delayed for nearly 30minutes when Severna Park's Kierston Muhly was hit in the mouth by a ball with 50seconds remaining in regulation. She was taken off by ambulance, and her injury fired up Severna Park, which dominated both overtime periods.

"We said, 'Let's do it for Kierston,'" longtime Severna Park coach Lil Shelton said.

They did just that. The Falcons controlled the 7-on-7 play throughout both overtime periods, constantly putting pressure on Broadneck goalie Jenna Tribull, who made eight of her 15 saves in overtime.

She stopped one shot late in the second overtime, but the ball made its way to Ballera, who flicked it into the cage from right in front. Kelsey Fielder got the assist.

"It was all for" Muhly, Ballera said. "She did so much for the team. The least we could do was win for her."

Broadneck found itself in an unusual position in this game -- trailing. The Bruins not only hadn't been behind all season, but they also didn't give up a goal in their first seven games.

That's what made their second-half rally more impressive. Stengel scored 4:39 into the second half to cut the Severna Park lead to 2-1. She then tied the game with 13:08 left in regulation after Broadneck's third corner hit in 90 seconds.

Both teams had a few good scoring chances, but Severna Park's pressure on Tribull and the defense eventually paid off. Tribull made great stops in the two overtime periods that kept Broadneck fired up on a cold night.

"Our goalie was phenomenal," Broadneck coach Jen Parks said. "She's great, and she deserves some applause."
