Terps field hockey coach Meharg earns 400th victory
The Maryland field hockey team (10-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), ranked No. 1 in the latest NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, earned a 4-3 victory at No. 19 Michigan (7-5, 2-0 Big Ten) on Sunday to give coach Missy Meharg career win No. 400. Senior Katie O'Donnell had her sixth career hat trick.
More college field hockey: Paige Clutter scored three goals, leading host Old Dominion to an 8-0 rout of Towson (5-7, 1-3 Colonial Athletic Association).
Women's college soccer: No. 5/7 Maryland (9-1-1, 1-1-1 ACC) suffered its first loss of the season, 1-0, at Virginia Tech (7-5-0, 1-2-0 ACC). The Hokies' Ashley Manning scored in the 53rd minute on a counterattack. Cross country: First-year student Daniel Jacobs of Hood clocked the fastest 8K time in program history Saturday at the Don Cathcart Invitational hosted by Salisbury, finishing the course in 26 minutes, 58 seconds.
Golf: Will Bowman of Greensboro, N.C., shot a final-round 69 for a 54-hole total of 209 and won the 104th Middle Atlantic Amateur championship Sunday at Columbia Country Club. Kyle Stough of Laurel, a recent Virginia graduate, also closed with a 69 to get second at 213. The two had been tied going to the final nine holes.
NHL: Joel Ward scored two goals, Cal O'Reilly added a goal and an assist, and Pekka Rinne made 22 saves for the visiting Nashville Predators, who beat the Washington Capitals, 3-0. Washington finished 5-1 in the preseason. The Capitals' regular season will begin Friday night in Atlanta.
