No. 2 Arundel holds off No. 5 Broadneck, 10-6

Fifth-ranked Broadneck kept No. 2 Arundel's high-flying offense scrambling to find ways to move the ball throughout Thursday night's key Anne Arundel County matchup.

It was the Wildcats' defense that had the final say, however, as Arundel held on for a 10-6 victory.

The Bruins had an opportunity to pull the upset, as they advanced 56 yards to the Wildcats' 12 with 2:19 remaining in the game. But Jonathan Haskett came up with an interception in the end zone to preserve the win for Arundel.

"I had to step up," Haskett said. "They kept attacking me. I read the quarterback and made the play. It was two good defenses making plays."

After Arundel's Tyler Young fielded the opening kickoff at his 18, he lateraled to Gary Cropper, who raced 80 yards for a touchdown.

Broadneck's defense kept the Bruins in the game by sacking Arundel's Nick Rosati three times in the first half.

The Bruins (2-1), who had just four first downs to Arundel's eight in the first half, began to pick up yards in the second half behind the running of fullback Ronnie VanMeter, including a 16-yard scamper early in the third quarter. Arundel, however, buckled down and kept the Bruins out of the red zone.

"I think we played pretty good defense tonight," Arundel coach Chuck Markiewicz said. "Broadneck had a good game plan. We just didn't play very well. We kind of got into a funk and never recovered."

An interception by Ryan Terribile gave the Bruins the ball on their 47, and an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty on Arundel two plays later gave them an additional 15 yards.

On a fourth-and-1 from the 16, Bruins quarterback James Mullis picked up the yard on a keeper 1:32 into the third quarter. VanMeter then scored on a 1-yard run, but the kick failed and Arundel led 7-6 with 11:31 left in the game.

An interception by Arundel's Michael Partilla with 7:11 remaining in the game set up a 24-yard field goal by Wade Korvin for a four-point margin. After Haskett's interception, Joseph Blackwell (164 yards on 17 carries) ran 68 yards and Arundel took a knee to seal the win.
