The St. Mary's field hockey team played tough defense to hold No. 12 Archbishop Spalding scoreless for two halves Thursday. The host Cavaliers broke through in the first minute of overtime when midfielder Christine Galligan scored for a 1-0 victory in an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference game.
Two Saints got cards, one red, another yellow, forcing the team to play a man down for the last 15 minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second half.
"They had the advantage," St. Mary's coach Becca Horn said. "And both teams had opportunities. The girls played amazing to hold them scoreless through regulation."
Spalding improved to 4-0, 2-0, and St. Mary's fell to 2-1, 1-1.
John Carroll 7, Institute of Notre Dame 0:Sarah Dennison and Caroline Haggerty each scored twice to power the host Patriots past the Indians. Alison Siegel added a goal and two assists for John Carroll, which outshot IND 17-1.
