2 transfers, Caringi lift UMBC to 5-3 win in soccer opener

Despite the return of 11 starters to the UMBC lineup, it was a trio of newcomers that sparked the Retrievers' men's soccer team in a 5-3 victory over visiting Virginia Military Institute in the opening game for both teams Thursday. Junior transfer Nirav Kadam scored a goal and added two assists, senior transfer Danny Shannon scored the game's first goal and added an assist, and freshman Pete Caringi III (Archbishop Curley) scored a pair of goals in his college debut. UMBC is 18-2 in 20 season openers under Pete Caringi Jr.

Women's college basketball: West Virginia hired Erin Brady as a graduate assistant coach. Brady, who played softball and basketball at Mount de Sales, graduated from West Virginia with a 3.9 grade-point average. Her father, John Brady, has coached the Annapolis boys basketball team for the past 33 years and is the state's all-time winningest public schools coach. … Mount St. Mary's elevated Denise King to the top assistant coaching position, named Lisa Steele as the second assistant and hired former Mount standout Brianna Gauthier as an assistant coach. Gauthier was an assistant at DivisionIII Norwich last season.

College gymnastics: Maryland named J.J.Ferreira an assistant coach. Ferreira was the 2010 Eastern College Athletic Conference Assistant Coach of the Year at Springfield College.

Golf: Terry Burke, 50, of Bethesda earned his first victory on the Fuzion/Minor League Golf Tour with a record 10-under-par 61 on the Eagle course at President Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Billiards: John Fink III was part of the Fort team from Baltimore that won the Open 9-Ball Division of the APA National Team Championships last week in Las Vegas.
