AND THE WINNER IS…: During a full-team exercise pitting the first offense against the first defense, the defense stood supreme. In five snaps, quarterback Joe Flacco was sacked by defensive end Trevor Pryce, linebacker Jarret Johnson and strong safety Dawan Landry. The defense jumped offsides once and Flacco completed a mid-range pass to wide receiver Anquan Boldin.
PLAY OF THE DAY: That's not to say, however, that the offense was a complete failure. Backup quarterback Marc Bulger and wide receiver Donte' Stallworth connected on a perfect up-and-out that left cornerback Cary Williams several yards behind and Stallworth streaking to the end zone for a 78-yard touchdown.
HANDS TEAM: The cornerbacks endured their fair share of struggles. Travis Fisher was whistled for pass interference to prevent wide receiver Derrick Mason from getting behind him for a long reception. Cornerbacks Doug Dutch and Williams also dropped interceptions.
CATCH OF THE DAY: Wide receiver Demetrius Williams may have missed Monday afternoon's practice for unspecified reasons, but he put an exclamation point on his return with a spectacular one-handed grab of a Bulger throw. Williams controlled the ball with his right hand and pulled it into his body without falling to the turf.
DEFENSIVE HIJINKS: Considering the personalities on the defensive side of the ball, perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that the defense tends to carry the load in terms of lightening up practices. Linebacker/defensive end Terrell Suggs hassled running backs Ray Rice and Jalen Parmele and kicker Shayne Graham (more on that later), and defensive tackle Kelly Gregg stuck an official's flag in his facemask after the official whistled the defense for illegal use of the hands.
KICKING UPDATE: Tuesday was not a good day for Shayne Graham, who was unsuccessful on 3-of-4 field-goal attempts. All three misses – from 35, 52 and 57 yards – went left of the goalposts. Billy Cundiff converted five of his six kicks, including a 52-yarder. His only miss was a 46-yarder that strayed wide right.
INJURIES: Offensive tackles Jared Gaither (back spasms) and Tony Moll (concussion), cornerbacks Chris Carr (left hamstring) and K.J. Gerard (hamstring), safety Marcus Paschal (right leg) and guard Daniel Sanders (unspecified) did not practice. Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (back), wide receiver Demetrius Williams (unspecified), rookie offensive tackle Ramon Harewood (knees) and rookie cornerback Prince Miller (birth of daughter) returned to practice. Players who remain on the team's physically-unable-to-perform list are free safety Ed Reed (hip), cornerback Lardarius Webb (knee), linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo (quad) and running back Matt Lawrence (knee).
OVERHEARD: "Hey, Graham, that's disgusting!" — Linebacker/defensive end Terrell Suggs after Graham shanked a 35-yarder wide left.
NEXT DAY'S SCHEDULE: Wednesday's practice is closed to spectators and the media. The team opens the preseason Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers at M&T Bank Stadium.
