Ex-Terp McFadden named assistant coach at Florida

Caitlyn McFadden (Notre Dame Prep), who won the 2010 NCAA tournament Most Outstanding Player award in her senior season at Maryland, has been named assistant coach at Florida. The Gators finished their inaugural season with a 10-8 record, beating three ranked opponents, and reached the semifinals of the American Lacrosse Conference tournament. McFadden won the Tewaaraton Award and Honda Sports Award, which go to the best player in the sport, and was honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference in her junior and senior seasons as Player of the Year and Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Grizzlies' Vasquez has ankle surgery to remove bone spur

The Memphis Grizzlies say rookie guard Greivis Vasquez (Maryland) underwent surgery on his right ankle to remove a bone spur. The team said in a news release Tuesday night that the surgery was successful and he was expected to return for training camp in late September. Vasquez, a first-round draft pick, was injured while playing in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The surgery was done in Baltimore.

Spalding hires Palumbo; Mystics lose to Sun, 88-78

Jeff Palumbo has been named baseball coach at Archbishop Spalding, replacing Steve Miller. "Jeff is a true baseball guy with an educator's approach to the game," athletic director Lee Dove said. "We are very fortunate to have him join our staff and work with our players. I look forward to our relationships as the Cavaliers program continues to develop, achieve and succeed in the very competitive Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference."

WNBA: Asjha Jones scored 10 of her season-high 23 points in the fourth period and the host Connecticut Sun ended a two-game losing streak with an 88-78 win over the Washington Mystics. The Sun (13-10) moved with a half-game of the Mystics (13-9) for third place in the Eastern Conference. Crystal Langhorne (Maryland) had 23points to lead Washington.

Golf: Karen Paolozzi, a PGA apprentice assistant professional at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, won the Callaway Golf Middle Atlantic Section Assistant Professional Championship with a 10-under-par 134 at Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort in Flintstone. Billy Hoffman, a PGA assistant pro at Westwood CC in Vienna, Va., was second at 138, including a course-record 64 on the second day.

Capitals: Washington re-signed forward Tomas Fleischmann to a one-year, $2.6million contract. Fleischmann, 26, set career highs in goals (23), assists (28) and plus/minus (+9) in 2009-10.

Men's college basketball: Washington College hired Robert Hughes as an assistant coach. Hughes spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Drew and previously worked at Saint Joseph's, his alma mater. Hughes replaces Jonathan Webb, who recently accepted an assistant position at Washington and Lee.

Major League Soccer: D.C. United waived South African forward Thabiso "Boyzzz" Khumalo, 29, who made 27 appearances since being acquired on loan late in the 2008 season.
