AC St. Louis withstands heat, Palace Baltimore, 1-0
With temperatures reaching 106 degrees Saturday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, AC St.Louis (4-10-4) used a goal by Mike Ambersley in the 74th minute to earn a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace Baltimore (5-9-4) in the USSF 2nd Division. Palace Baltimore's two shots on goal were by Japanese midfielder Tsuyoshi Yoshitake. Palace's next game will be Saturday against the Montreal Impact in Boyds.
D.C. United: Danny Allsopp scored three times to help D.C. United beat second-tier English team Portsmouth, 4-0, at RFK Stadium. Pablo Hernandez added a goal for United, which also beat AC Milan in May, but has only won three of 17 Major League Soccer matches. Portsmouth finished its North American tour 2-2.
Youth: The Baltimore Bays Chelsea Under-15 Boys, coached by Brandon Quaranta, defeated Albion White of Southern California, 2-1, in overtime to win the US Youth Soccer national championship final in Overland Park, Kan.

Utah's Bowerbank wins Free Flow at Charmcity
Tyson Bowerbank, 15, of Sandy, Utah, won the Gatorade Free Flow Tour stop at Charmcity Skatepark in Canton, earning a spot in the finals in Salt Lake City, where he can win the chance to compete against the pros in the Dew Tour Championships in Las Vegas this October. Miles Willard, 13, of Towson was second, followed by Kabian Maxwell, 18, of Baltimore and Tyler Thomas, 13, of Baltimore. "This contest was really good," Bowerbank said. "The kids here rip."

January helps first-place Fever hold off Mystics, 78-73
Briann January scored 19 points, including four free throws in the final 2.9 seconds, to help the Indiana Fever (15-7) hold on to first place in the WNBA Eastern Conference with a 78-73 win over the host Washington Mystics (13-8). The Fever held off a rally to win its fourth straight and sixth in the past seven. Indiana moved 11/2 games ahead of Washington in the tight Eastern Conference, where only four games separated the six teams at the start of the day. Katie Smith scored 17 points to lead the Mystics (13-8). Crystal Langhorne (Maryland) added 15points and 13 rebounds.
Men's college lacrosse: Washington College named Andrew Delaney, J.L. Reppert (Navy) and Ian Shure as assistant coaches. Shure has coached at Owings Mills and Boys' Latin.
Horse racing: Acting upon the advice of Delaware Racing Commission veterinarians, Delaware Park in Stanton canceled the live racing card Saturday because of excessive heat.
Tennis: Two-time French Open runner-up Robin Soderling has pulled out of next month's Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington for personal reasons.
