Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins) had four goals and an assist, and Kyle Dixon (Archbishop Spalding) and Drew Westervelt (UMBC) had three goals apiece as the U.S. men's national team defeated Japan, 20-5, in the semifinals of the Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship in Manchester, England. The Americans will advance to play in Saturday's final against defending champion Canada, which dealt the U.S. its only loss of the tournament in pool play Saturday.
Bayhawks drop fifth straight, fall on the road to Lizards, 14-11
A late rally from Jeremy Sieverts (McDonogh, Maryland) wasn't enough to halt the Chesapeake Bayhawks' midseason slide, and the team fell for the fifth straight time, losing to the host Long Island Lizards, 14-11. After a goal from Ben Rubeor (Loyola High) drew the Bayhawks within four late in the game, Sieverts scored his first two goals of the season, including a two-pointer, to cut the Lizards' lead to 12-11. But Stephen Berger (Mount St. Joseph) put the game out of reach by connecting on a shot from near midfield after the Bayhawks had extended their pressure in hopes of forcing a turnover. The Bayhawks (4-8) will next play the Chicago Machine at home on July31.
McCarthy advances to quarters at Junior Amateur
Denny McCarthy of Burtonsville defeated medalist Curtis Thompson, 3 and 2, in the morning and held off Devon Purse, 1-up, in the afternoon to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in Ada, Mich. Ben Warnquist of Rockville won a morning match, then lost in the afternoon to Richard Jung, 3 and 2.
More golf: Kaitlyn Rohrback of Crofton Country Club won three straight holes early on the back nine and broke away to defeat 2008 champion Caroline Sweet, 4 and 3, for the Maryland State Women's Amateur championship at Sparrows Point Country Club.
College football: Navy and The National Football Foundation will jointly honor legendary defensive back Chet Moeller with an NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute on Oct. 16, when the Midshipmen host Southern Methodist. Moeller, who played at Navy from 1973 to 1975, will be formally inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on Dec. 7 in New York.
