Major Indoor Soccer League announced Monday that it granted unanimous approval to the newest MISL team, the Missouri Comets, which will play its home games at the Independence Events Center in Independence, Mo., for the upcoming 2010-11 season. The league now has six member clubs: the Baltimore Blast, La RaZa de Monterrey, Mexico, the Milwaukee Wave, Philadelphia KiXX, Rockford Rampage and the Comets. The 2010-11 regular season will begin in mid-November and end at the end of March, with playoffs concluding in early April.
U-16 team begins development academy tourney with 0-0 draw
D.C. United's Under-16 team played to a 0-0 draw with De Anza Force on Saturday in its first group match at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy tournament at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. United goalkeeper Cody Niedermier kept United's shutout intact by denying a last-minute strike to end the game. United took on the Chicago Fire's U-16 side on Monday night and will play a final group stage match against Sockers FC on Wednesday at 10 p.m. The final stages of the eight-team tournament are to be played Friday.
More United: Players Clyde Simms, Devon McTavish, Troy Perkins, Adam Cristman and Chris Pontius will be on hand today at 55th and Clay Streets NE in Washington to work alongside Habitat for Humanity staff and volunteers. Through its United Builds program, the team is taking part in three projects for Habitat for Humanity in Washington, Arlington, Va., and Montgomery County. On Saturday, a second build will take place in Arlington.
Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame announces 2010 class
The Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame will add six members this fall: soccer star Leo Cullen, field hockey phenom Christine DeBow Mitchell, lacrosse and field hockey star Laura Harmon, triple jump specialist Marchelle Payne-Gassaway, football all-time leading tackler Eric Wilson and lacrosse great Peter Worstell. The inductees will be presented at the Campus Marriott Inn & Conference Center on Oct. 1. Tickets for the induction ceremony will go on sale in mid-August and can be ordered by contacting the M Club Foundation by phone at 301-314-2619 or by email at mclub@umd.edu. Tickets are $75 per person or $700 for a table of 10; RSVP by Sept. 20.
