With 24 points in debut, Wall leads Wizards to opening win

Guard John Wall finished with a team-high 24 points and eight assists in his Summer League debut, and the Washington Wizards defeated the Golden State Warriors, 84-79, at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas on Sunday. The No.1 overall pick in June's draft, Wall shot 7-for-15 from the field, collected a pair of rebounds and also blocked a shot as the Wizards began their five-game Summer League schedule. Center JaVale McGee added 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting along with a game-high 13 rebounds. The Wizards continue their Summer League schedule with a game against the Los Angeles Clippers tonight at 10 p.m.

Cook's 11 assists help U.S. earn inaugural FIBA crown

Quinn Cook of Bowie handed out a team-high 11 assists as the USA Basketball Under-17 men's national team defeated Poland (7-1), 111-80, on Sunday to claim the gold medal in the inaugural FIBA U-17 world championship in Hamburg, Germany. Herman Harried, head coach at Lake Clifton, served as one of two assistant coaches for the team. "[Assistant] coach [Kevin] Sutton and Coach Harried, we couldn't do it without those two guys," head coach Don Showalter said. "We really put in a lot of work." Not only just from the standpoint of getting the team ready, but we spent time watching tapes from last year and we thought we were really well prepared coming in, and a lot of that has to do with coaches Sutton and Harried."

Towson's Hoff wins 200 for 2nd victory at L.A. meet

Two-time Olympian Katie Hoff of Towson led from start to finish in the women's 200-meter freestyle at the Los Angeles Grand Prix, touching in 1 minute, 57.58 seconds to earn her second victory of the meet. Two of Hoff's FAST teammates, national team member Ariana Kukors and Olympian Kate Ziegler of Fairfax, Va., touched second and third in 1:58.95 and 1:59.77, respectively. "It's kind of clicked for me at this meet, and I'm relieved and excited for everything to finally come together," Hoff said. "It kind of gives me the boost I need heading into nationals." On Saturday, Hoff set the meet record in the women's 400 freestyle with a time of 4:06.21. Hoff's time was nearly three seconds faster than the former meet record of 4:09.04, set by Costa Rica's Claudia Poll in 2000. She finished more than three seconds ahead of Ziegler, who touched in 4:09.44.

Mariners trample Stampede; Cavalry coming for title game

Led by five touchdown passes from E.J. Nemeth and five interceptions from its defense, the Baltimore Mariners defeated the Harrisburg Stampede, 63-15, on Saturday at 1st Mariner Arena to win the American Indoor Football Association Eastern Conference championship. The Mariners will host the Wyoming Cavalry (13-1) in the AIFA championship at 4 p.m. July 25. The host Cavalry defeated the San Jose Wolves (9-5), 57-37, in the Western Conference title game Sunday night.

Golf: An experienced Virginia team won six of eight singles matches and defeated Maryland, 81/2- 31/2, in the 12th annual competition between Junior girls representing each state association and playing for the Poindexter Cup at Turf Valley Country Club. Maryland, which got 11/2 points in Saturday's fourball play, received wins from Maia Scheckter of Takoma Park and Karishma Thiagaraj of Rockville. Virginia leads the series, 9-1-2.
