Former Coppin State assistant coach Sherman Reed was named the school's head coach Friday. He replaces Mike Scolinos, who left the program in June. Reed was an Eagles assistant in 2008 under Harvey Lee and in 2009 working with Scolinos. Reed, a Baltimore native, played at Towson State from 1979 to 1983 and has coached at various levels, including Western Tech and Catonsville high schools. He was director of the Yankee Rebels from 2005 to this year.
More baseball: Towson junior Austin Harclerode (Centennial), a first baseman for Youse's Orioles, has been named as the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League Player of the Week. He batted .391 in seven games last week.
Women's soccer: Four players signed letters of intent with UMBC: Stephanie Smith, an outside midfielder from Archbishop Spalding; center back Kelsi Morris (Bowie), a transfer from Pittsburgh; Amy Savage, forward-midfielder from Ottawa; and Shannon McGuinness, a midfielder from East Meadow, N.Y.

Festivities set for Mariners' Eastern title game tonight
The Mariners host the Harrisburg Stampede in the American Indoor Football Association Eastern Conference championship game at 7 tonight at 1st Mariner Arena. Fans can attend a pre-game party at The Nest on Pratt Street, a block south of the arena. There will be an outdoor concert by Dirt and drink specials. The first 500 fans entering the arena will receive a free AIFA Eastern Conference regular-season champion team photo. There will also be giveaways and promotions in the main concourse. Game tickets are $10 for 100 and 200level seats, and $27 for the first two rows.

Coppin's Goldsberry scores 30 in Baltimore Summer League
Vince Goldsberry (Coppin State) scored 30points, leading Field House to an 81-79 triple-overtime, sudden-death victory over Team 6 in the Summer Basketball League on Thursday night at Loyola's Reitz Arena. Former Massachusetts star Ricky Harris (Calvert Hall) had 23 for Team 6. Kevin Thompson (Morgan State, Walbrook) scored 19to lead Abacus to a 58-48 victory over Team 5, which got 10 from Isaiah Philmore (Towson, John Carroll) and Ameer Ali (Morgan State). Baltimore native Jermaine Dixon, formerly of Pittsburgh, scored 19 as Tarks Grill cruised, 75-58, past Mad River, which got 13 from DePaul-bound Cleveland Melvin (Lake Clifton). … Games will be played Sunday and Monday nights at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30, with the championship scheduled for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. All games are at Reitz. The last three nights were previously scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Own goal contributes to 2-0 setback in Puerto Rico
A 24th-minute strike by Martinez and a 40th-minute own goal by Andrew Marshall helped the Puerto Rico Islanders to a 2-0 victory over visiting Crystal Palace Baltimore. The victory, worth three points, enabled the Islanders (17) to leapfrog Palace Baltimore (15) in the USSF D-2 Pro League standings.
Schedule: Palace Baltimore will play its next four home matches at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds. The games will be 7 p.m. Wednesday against the Rochester Rhinos; 3 p.m. July 24 against AC St. Louis; 7 p.m. July 31 vs. the Montreal Impact; and 7 p.m. Aug. 4 against Miami FC. The 5,200-seat facility near Germantown is currently home to the Washington Freedom of Women's Professional Soccer and D.C. United's U.S. Open Cup games. "It's a phenomenal opportunity," Palace Baltimore president Pete Medd said. "We are really excited about the prospect of playing in this top-notch facility."

Hoff upset by 15-year-old in 200 backstroke at L.A. meet
Madison White, 15, of Crow Canyon, Calif., upset Olympian Katie Hoff of Towson in the 200-meter backstroke, touching in 2 minutes, 12.15 seconds to Hoff's 2:12.79, at the Los Angeles Grand Prix meet. Kate Ziegler of Fairfax, Va., shattered the meet record in the 800 freestyle, turning in a time of 8:25.89. Her next closest competitor – 2008 Olympic teammate and national team member Chloe Sutton of Mission Viejo, Calif. – finished in 8:30.50. Chelsea Chenault, a member of the 2010 national youth team, was third in 8:38.03. China's Yang Jiao and Yin Chen dominated the men's and women's 200-meter butterfly, respectively.
