Angel McCoughtry (St. Frances) and Iziane Castro Marques each scored 32 points to lead the Atlanta Dream to a 108-103 overtime victory against the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday night. Erika DeSouza had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Eastern Conference-leading Dream (14-5), winners of five of their past six games. McCoughtry and Alison Bales — starting in place of the injured Sancho Lyttle — had 10rebounds each. "It was tough without Sancho tonight," McCoughtry said. "We knew that once our post players got into foul trouble that we had to box and rebound so we could get our running game going." Sun rookie Tina Charles had a season-high 27 points and 20 rebounds for her WNBA-leading 14th double-double. Asjha Jones scored 17 points, Sandrine Gruda had 16 and Kara Lawson 11 for fourth-place Connecticut (10-8), which lost its third straight for the first time this season.
Tuesday night: Kristi Toliver (Maryland) had 16 points and five rebounds off the bench, but the Los Angeles Sparks (4-13) lost, 98-89, to the visiting Phoenix Mercury (7-11).

UMBC: Less than two months after coaching the Retrievers to their first America East championship game, Kelly Berger (Hammond) has signed a three-year contract extension that runs through the 2012-13 season. In her first season as a head coach, Berger, 25, guided UMBC, which was picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches' poll, to the four-team America East title for the first time since 2006. UMBC beat regular-season champion Albany in the semifinals before falling to host and six-time defending champ Boston University, 11-10.
Honors: Virginia senior Brittany Kalkstein (Roland Park Country) was named VaSID University Division All-State Player of the Year, and James Madison freshman Casey Ancarrow (John Carroll) was named Rookie of the Year.
Loyola's Etherly scores 31 in Summer League victory
Erik Etherly, who transferred from Northeastern to Loyola, scored 31 points to help Field House defeat Mad River, 90-73, in the Summer Basketball League at Reitz Arena. Justin Jackson (Digital Harbor High) had 25 for Mad River. Tark's Grill defeated Abacus, 64-57, behind 25 points from Jamal Barney (Loyola, Southwestern High). Abacus got 15 from Aric Brooks ( Morgan State, St. Frances High). Bobby Olson (Loyola), Erique Gumbs (Towson) and Ameer Ali (Morgan State) each scored 14 points in helping Team 5 to a 76-75 win over Team 6, which got 23 from Braxton Dupree (Towson, Calvert Hall).
Major League Lacrosse: The Chesapeake Bayhawks will be without midfielder Kyle Dixon, defenseman Joe Cinosky (Maryland) and faceoff specialist Alex Smith on Saturday night in their game against the Boston Cannons at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The trio will be at the world championships next Thursday through July 24 in Manchester, England. Ben DeFelice (Towson) likely will handle faceoffs, and recent draft choice Sam DeVore (Johns Hopkins) could dress in place of Cinosky.
Youth lacrosse: Lauren Lea (Archbishop Spalding) scored the winning goal as M&D; Lax 2012 upset the Long Island Yellow Jackets 2011 squad, 5-4, to win the Varsity title at the National Draw on June 25-27 in Marlton, N.J. Katie Ferraro (McDonogh) made two one-on-one saves to preserve the lead.
