Garrity makes 21 saves, but Bayhawks drop 3rd straight

Goalie Chris Garrity (St. Mary's) stopped 21 shots Sunday, but the Chesapeake Bayhawks suffered their third straight Major League Lacrosse defeat witha 12-10 loss to the Denver Outlaws before an announced 23,433 at Invesco Field. Attackman Ben Rubeor (Loyola High) scored three goals and had one assist for the Bayhawks (4-3). Midfielder Max Seibald scored three goals for Denver, which outscored Chesapeake 5-2 in the third quarter to take control of a close game. "It was a hard-fought game the whole way," Chesapeake general manager Spencer Ford said. "This loss wasn't about offense or defense, heart or hustle. It came down to the intangible things. We got beat on ground balls the entire game, and we made some crucial mistakes on offense."

Under-14 Yankee Rebels sweep Ohio tournament

The under-14 Baltimore-based Yankee Rebels went undefeated to win the Mick Sharkey Memorial Storm Club 4th of July Baseball Tourney in Cincinnati this weekend. The Rebels won by a combined 66-22 in five games, including a 10-0 win against the defending champion Northern Kentucky Dragons. Andrew Witczak (Calvert Hall) led all batters with a .667 batting average and threw a no-hitter, Jonathan Calvin (River Hill) hit a second-best .636, Brandon Arvon (Loyola) hit a tournament-best two home runs, Jordan Taylor (Old Mill) had a team-high six stolen bases and Brandon Hovel (Kenwood) pitched 61/3 innings with a 1.43 ERA.

Byrum, Sanchez qualify for U.S. Senior Open after playoff

PGA Tour veteran Curt Byrum and Javier Sanchez survived a four-man playoff at Holly Hills Country Club in Ijamsville to qualify for the U.S. Senior Open. After the players had tied at 3-under-par 69 through 18 holes, Byrum set up a birdie at the 407-yard second with a 310-yard drive, then wedged to 4 feet, while Sanchez two-putted for par. Marty West of Rockville bogeyed the second hole, and Terry Burke of Bethesda bogeyed the first extra hole, becoming alternates for the Open. Frederick native Donnie Hammond shot 70 in the 61-player field.

Men's college track and field: Hood added distance runner Stephen McNamara from Bayside, N.Y., and the Bronx High School of Science. … Former Frostburg State All-America runner Brian Leiter (Francis Scott Key) recently met the USA Track & Field national championships "B" standard in the 1,500-meter run at the American Milers Club High Performance Series meet in Indianapolis. Leiter covered the distance in 3 minutes, 44.18 seconds; the "B" standard is 3:45.00.

Football: Towson and the Baltimore Chapter of the National Football Foundation will host its first Football 101 for Women Clinic on Aug. 7 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The registration deadline is July 30. The cost is $30. For information, call 410-704-3571.
