Laurel Park schedule starts July 31, concludes Aug. 22
Live racing will return to Laurel Park on July 31, the Maryland Jockey Club and Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association announced. The mini-meet will include Maryland-bred stakes races on Aug. 14 (Jameela) and Aug. 21 (Mister Diz). The 11-day summer stand will take place each Friday, Saturday and Sunday for three consecutive weeks after opening weekend, and will conclude Aug. 22.
Colleges Zaleski named Towson's interim athletic director
Ted Zaleski Jr. was named Towson's interim athletic director. Zaleski replaces Mike Hermann, who resigned June 15. Zaleski has overseen the athletics department as chief of staff to the president since 2003 and will retain that position and assume his new role until a search committee names a new athletic director.
Women's lacrosse: Ohio State named former Maryland goalie Alexis Venechanos coach Thursday. Venechanos was the coach at Massachusetts for the past four years after a three-year stint as an assistant at Northwestern.
Women's basketball: UMBC named Cheri Eleazer and Jessica Anger assistant coaches. Eleazer was an assistant at Division III St. Joseph's College on Long Island for the past three seasons, while Anger spent the past two seasons as the director of basketball operations at Iona.
Football: Former Maryland State star Calvert "Cal" Davidson will be inducted into the Hampton Roads African American Sports Hall of Fame on Nov. 6. Davidson helped lead the Hawks to Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships in 1960 and 1961
'Agent Zero' changes mind, doesn't want No. 6 jersey
Gilbert Arenas' search for a new number has taken a detour. The Washington Wizards guard, who has worn No. 0 since college, announced in March that he would switch to No. 6 for the 2010-11 season. But Wizards owner Ted Leonsis revealed in his blog Thursday that Arenas wants to change his jersey to something other than No.6.
