The Ravens reached an agreement on a three-year contract Monday with offensive tackle Ramon Harewood, the team's final pick in this year's draft.
Harewood, a sixth-round pick out of Morehouse, is considered a developmental player who likely won't make an impact this year. But the Ravens have expectations for the 6-foot-6, 341-pound Barbados native.
"Ramon Harewood is a huge man," Ravens director of college scouting Joe Hortiz said. "He's a giant. He can knock down his side of the line of scrimmage. He's raw, and he needs a lot of developmental work with technique, but he's got foot speed -- he ran a 5.08 [40-yard dash] at his pro day. He's got a lot of work to do, but he's got the passion and drive to get better."
Harewood missed most of the offseason camps after damaging the soft tissue in his right knee. He returned to participate in individual drills and should be ready to suit up for the start of training camp in late July.
It's not surprising that Harewood is a quick study. Harewood, who planned on being an engineer, enrolled at Morehouse in 2006 on an academic scholarship. He earned better than a 3.0 grade-point average in applied physics and engineering.
He was projected to be a seventh-round pick or a priority undrafted free agent. But the Ravens decided to use their last pick (194th overall in the draft) on Harewood, who could play tackle or guard.
"The money isn't what drives me," Harewood said. "But, of course, it's going to be great."
