Caps' Ovechkin loses out on Hart but wins Lindsay

Henrik Sedin wrecked Alex Ovechkin's bid for an NHL Most Valuable Player threepeat. The Vancouver Canucks' star, who had a league-best 83 assists, captured the Hart Trophy on Wednesday night during the NHL's awards ceremony in Las Vegas. Ovechkin, captain of the Washington Capitals, who had taken home the prize each of the previous two years, finished second. Sedin received 46 first-place votes, Ovechkin had 40 and the Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby finished third with 20. Ovechkin, who had 50 goals and 59 assists for 109points (tied for second in the league), was honored earlier in the night by his fellow players, winning the Ted Lindsay Award for top player, which is presented by the NHL Players' Association. Sedin posted a career-high 112 points; Crosby tied for the NHL lead in goals (51) and points (109). Ovechkin, a left wing, and defenseman Mike Green were named to the NHL All-Star first team. Also Wednesday, Capitals goalie José Theodore won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Theodore created a charity to benefit the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital where his infant son died last summer.

Golf: Maryland senior Tom Hanna III qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, which will be July 12-17 at Bryan Park Golf Club in Greensboro, N.C. Hanna shot a 70-73 — 143 at the Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Va.
