Ex-Stallions owner Speros gets Virginia team in UFL
Virginia businessman Jim Speros, who was founding owner of the Baltimore Stallions of the Canadian Football League, is the owner of a provisional Tidewater franchise of the United Football League that will begin play next year, the league announced Monday. Former Washington Redskins quarterback Doug Williams will be the general manager. The franchise, which will be based in Norfolk, will be the UFL's sixth, joining the Florida Tuskers, Hartford Colonials, Las Vegas Locomotives, Omaha Nighthawks and Sacramento Mountain Lions. The Stallions, who in 1995 became the only American-based team to win the Grey Cup, moved to Montreal for the 1996 season after the NFL Ravens moved to town.
Ravens: After passing a physical, safety Ken Hamlin signed a one-year contract, the team announced. Hamlin confirmed Thursday to The Baltimore Sun that he had agreed on a one-year deal. The eight-year NFL veteran spent the past three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and went to the Pro Bowl in 2007.

Cloud, longtime football coach at Navy, is dead at 85
Former Navy coach, William & Mary football standout and NFL player Jack Cloud died Saturday morning at the age of 85. Cloud, a College Football Hall of Famer, taught physical education and coached football for 32 years at the academy. He was 83-13-3 as head lightweight (now called sprint) coach and was a varsity assistant in 1961 and from 1973 to 1979. After he retired from coaching, Cloud was an associate professor of physical education and special assistant to the director of athletics until 1990. A memorial will be held at noon Saturday at Mariners Church in Annapolis. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; daughters, Wendy and Patty; and son, Jack Jr.
Morgan State: The Varsity "M" Club Inc. announced that former football players Darrell Coulter and Bobby Hammond, basketball player Harry Johnson, lacrosse player David Raymond, swimmer John Turner and current athletic administration/staff member Arno Adams will be inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct.1 at the Student Tyler Ballroom. Women's college basketball: UMBC added two transfers: point guard Raven Harris (American, Virginia Beach, Va.) and Brittany Crowell (James Madison, Princess Anne). They may practice with the team in 2010-11 and will have two years of eligibility remaining, starting in 2011-12. … Morgan State announced the addition of 10 newcomers, including four freshmen: forward Dakia Manning (Philadelphia/Freire Charter School), post player Moriah Goodman (Poly), forward Raquelle Jones (Lothian/Southern) and guard Whitney Southerland (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert). The junior transfers are guard Kianna Flanagan (Hawthorne, Calif./Moberly Area CC), guard MyQueisha Bratton (Fort Wayne, Ind./Vincennes CC) and post player Kyla Rollins (Cleveland/Seminole State CC). Also joining the team are guard Jamie Smith (Pittsburgh/Saint Peter's), who will be eligible to play this season, and forward-center Kaelin Reid (Cincinnati/Saint Louis) and senior guard Omara Parker (Annapolis, Towson), who will both sit out the coming season to fulfill NCAA transfer rules.

Capitals to open Oct. 8, play Pens on Super Bowl Sunday
The Washington Capitals' 82-game NHL regular-season schedule for 2010-11 will begin Oct. 8 at the Atlanta Thrashers, with the home opener set for the next night against the New Jersey Devils. As previously announced, the Capitals will face the Pittsburgh Penguins on New Year's Day at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. The two teams will also play on Super Bowl Sunday for the second straight year, a 12:30p.m. faceoff on Feb. 6 at Verizon Center.
Duckpins: Amy Sykes of Pittsfield, Mass., was the winner and Janet Sauter of Baltimore was the top qualifier with 1,192 pins at the Women's National Duckpin Association Pro Tour event over the weekend in Hamden, Conn. Jill Sachs of Baltimore won the first two ladder matches, defeating Melissa Llewellyn of Ontario, 143-142, and Tara Cohen of Owings Mills, 147-113, before falling to Sykes, 183-122. The next stop on the WNDA Pro Tour will be July 10-11 at Glen Burnie Bowl.
Minor league baseball: Left-handed pitcher Chris George was transferred from Double-A Bowie to Triple-A Norfolk. Left-handed pitcher Nathan Nery was transferred from Single-A Frederick to Bowie.
