Terps' Wujciak named to Nagurski Trophy watch list



Maryland linebacker Alex Wujciak was named on Monday to the watch list for the 2010 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, awarded annually to the nation's best defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte, N.C., Touchdown Club. It marks the third preseason watch list appearance for Wujciak, who is also among the candidates for the Lott Trophy (top impact defensive player) and Lombardi Award (top performer who plays near the line of scrimmage). Marvin Austin (North Carolina), Allen Bailey, (Miami) Da'Quan Bowers (Clemson), Bruce Carter (North Carolina), Ras-I Dowling (Virginia), Brandon Harris (Miami), Mark Herzlich (Boston College), Jarvis Jenkins (Clemson), Luke Kuechly (Boston College), DeAndre McDaniel (Clemson), Robert Quinn (North Carolina) and Quan Sturdivant (North Carolina) are the other ACC players on the 70-man list.The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists Nov. 18, and the trophy will be awarded Dec. 6 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte.

More college football: South Carolina associate athletic director Charlie Waddell confirmed that Navy has been added to the nonconference schedule for the third game of the 2011 season. The Midshipmen will travel to Columbia on Sept. 17 to face the Gamecocks at Williams-Brice Stadium. South Carolina agreed to pay the Naval Academy $950,000 to visit. In other Navy football news, six players will sign autographs this weekend outside Camden Yards. The Naval Academy Athletic Association will have an information table set up on Eutaw Street from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday night and from 2 p.m. to 4:30 Saturday afternoon. Senior defensive captain and safety Wyatt Middleton, junior corner Kwesi Mitchell and junior nose guard Torri Preston will be signing Friday, while sophomore cornerback De'Von Richardson, sophomore defensive end Collin Sturdivant and sophomore quarterback Tyler Lynch will be on hand Saturday.

Six-game preseason schedule to begin Sept. 11 at Columbus



The Washington Capitals announced their 2010-11 preseason schedule, which features six games against three opponents and includes three games at Verizon Center. The Caps play their first preseason game on the road at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Columbus Blue Jackets. The team's preseason home opener at Verizon Center is Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. against the Boston Bruins. In addition to playing both Columbus and Boston twice, the Caps also have two games against the Nashville Predators, beginning with a road game at Nashville on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. before wrapping up the preseason with a 12:30 p.m. home game Sunday, Oct. 3.

Ex-Maryland pitchers Kolarek, Gentzler sign pro contracts



Former Maryland pitchers Adam Kolarek (Catonsville) and Dan Gentzler have signed professional contracts with major league teams. Kolarek, a lefty who completed his junior season in 2010, was an 11th-round pick of the New York Mets and has been assigned to the Kingsport Mets, New York's Rookie-level affiliate. Kolarek finished his career at Maryland with a 5-6 record and a 5.03 ERA. Gentzler went undrafted but was signed by the Detroit Tigers and is currently with the Connecticut Tigers, Detroit's Class A short-season team in the New York-Penn League. … Navy senior outfielder Michael Speciale was awarded the Max Bishop-Joe Duff Trophy, which is given to the Navy varsity baseball player of the graduating class who contributed the most to the team's success over his varsity playing career.

USA Basketball: Justin Anderson (Montrose Christian) and Quinn Cook (DeMatha) were named to the U17 World Championship Team. Herman Harried, head coach at Lake Clifton, will serve as one of two assistant coaches.

College tennis: Johns Hopkins' David Maldow capped his standout career by earning All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in singles for the fourth straight year. On the women's team, Anita Bhamidipati was named an All-American in doubles, and Carolyn Warren earned the honor for both singles and doubles.

Mystics: General manager Angela Taylor said forward Jacinta Monroe underwent successful surgery at Sibley Memorial Hospital to repair a fracture of her left hand. Monroe suffered the injury during the first half of the Mystics' 65-61 overtime victory against the Chicago Sky on Saturday. She is expected to return to basketball activities in six to eight weeks.
