Ex-Navy coach, NFL player Jack Cloud dies at 85

Former Naval Academy coach, college football standout and NFL player Jack Cloud died Saturday morning at the age of 85.

Cloud taught physical education and coached football for 32 years at the Naval Academy. During his years in Annapolis, Cloud served as the head lightweight (now called sprint) football coach where he had an 83-13-3 record and eight league championships.

Before teaching and coaching, Cloud, a native of Britton, Okla., attended Maury High School in Norfolk, Va. After graduating high school, Cloud served three years as an Air Force gunner before going to William & Mary to play football.

He played fullback at William & Mary and in 1947 he scored a school record 102 points. He was selected a First-Team All-American in 1947, 1948 and 1949, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1990.

After college, Cloud was a sixth-round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers in 1950. He played four years in the NFL before injuries ended his career. Cloud played two seasons in Green Bay (1950-51) and two seasons with the Washington Redskins (1952-53).

After retiring from the NFL, Cloud served one year as an assistant football coach at William & Mary. He then started his career with Navy as the head coach and athletic director at Naval Station Norfolk from 1955-58 before going to the Naval Academy.

Cloud also served as an assistant coach for the varsity football team in 1961 and from 1973-79 for legendary Navy coaches Wayne Hardin and George Welsh.

"Jack was a great football player, a great coach and a great man," said Hardin. "He will truly be missed."

After he retired from coaching, Cloud was an associate professor of physical education and special assistant to the director of athletics until he retired in 1990.

There will be a memorial service for Cloud on Saturday at noon at Mariners Church in Annapolis.

Cloud is survived by his wife Charlotte; daughters Wendy and Patty; son Jack Jr.; nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
