Crystal Palace visits Richmond in 1st round of Cup

Crystal Palace Baltimore travels to University of Richmond Stadium tonight to face the Richmond Kickers in the first round of the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. This will be the first competitive meeting between the two clubs since Baltimore moved from the USL Second Division to the USSF Division 2 Pro League after the 2009 season. The winner will host either Real Maryland FC or Reading United AC next Tuesday. If Baltimore is victorious, UMBC Stadium will be the venue for the second-round contest, scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.

Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals will unveil their uniform for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic as part of the festivities at the 2010 Capitals Convention, to be held Oct. 2 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The convention will also be the first opportunity for Capitals fans to purchase Winter Classic merchandise. Tickets for the convention went on sale Monday morning to season-ticket holders and will be available to the general public Wednesday at WashingtonCaps.com. Ticket prices are $40 for adults and $25 for children 14 and younger if purchased by June 30; the adult price increases to $45 on July 1. A limited number of $500 golden tickets are also available with special access to every autograph session, priority seating in panel discussions and access to a VIP room. Fans can also purchase a $30 ticket without autograph access.

Washington Wizards

Forward Duke Crews of Bowie State is one of five players who will take part in a pre-draft workout for the Washington Wizards today at Verizon Center. Along with the 6-foot-8, 235-pound Crews, the Wizards will conduct workouts with 6-2, 180-pound guard Armon Bassett of Ohio; 6-10, 230-pound forward Craig Brackins of Iowa State; 6-7, 215-pound swingman Landry Fields of Stanford; and 6-8, 204-pound forward Tyren Johnson of Louisiana-Lafayette.

D.C. United

D.C. United midfielder Chris Pontius was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters. Pontius scored two goals and recorded an assist in D.C. United's 3-2 road victory over Seattle Sounders FC on Thursday. Also, the club signed Montenegrin midfielder Branko Boskovic as a designated player. Boskovic comes to United from Rapid Vienna, one of the most successful sides in the Austrian Bundesliga, where the left-footed player made 104 appearances from 2007 to 2010, scoring 19 goals in league play and helping the side to the 2007-08 Austrian championship along with the 2008 Austrian Supercup.

Salisbury senior Sarah McKinley (Dulaney) was named the National Defender of the Year in Division III by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association. It is the second season in a row that McKinley has earned the award.

UMES: Sophomore Damian Miles was named to the NorthJersey.com All-Decade Indoor Track and Field Team. Miles, who runs short distance and relays for the Hawks, was recognized for his efforts in the 300-meter dash during his time at Teaneck High School.

Straight pool: Big Daddy's Billiards in Glen Burnie will host the sixth annual Maryland Open 14.1 Straight Pool Championships, featuring 40 of the top straight pool players in the country, Saturday and Sunday. This event, one of the most prestigious straight pool tournaments of the year in the U.S., is highlighted by the participation of three world champions: Mika Immonen, winner of the World Straight Pool Tournament in 2006; Mike Sigel, a six-time world pool champion; and Bob Hunter, winner of the 1991 world championship.
