End comes early for Harford Tech in 4-0 loss to St. Michaels

Adam Parks hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to power St. Michaels to a 4-0 victory over Harford Tech in Tuesday's Class 1A state semifinal at McCurdy Field in Frederick.

Parks' homer to left came after two errors by the Harford Tech defense. Pitcher Kyle McKelvey threw a shutout for the Cougars, allowing only three hits and striking out five.

Despite the first-inning trouble, Harford Tech's Kenny West pitched a complete game for the Cobras. The senior gave up only one earned run and three hits.

Just one St. Michaels hitter got to second base after the first inning.

"He really buckled down," Harford Tech coach Paul Daniele said. "He didn't let the first inning get him down. He's been our senior leader all year long."

West, also one of the team's top hitters, finished the season with eight home runs and 28 RBIs.

The Cougars (22-2) advanced to Saturday's Class 1A state final at Ripken Stadium, where they will play Clear Spring, a 10-0 winner over Surrattsville.
