Boys Athlete of the Week // Michael Katz, Gilman, tennis

The junior avenged his only two losses of the season by defeating McDonogh's Alex Sidney on Friday to capture the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference No. 1 singles title at McDonogh. Katz, who has played No. 1 singles since his freshman year, claimed the title when Sidney retired because of leg cramps during the tiebreaker in the final set — 7-5, 4-6, 6-6 (ret.). Going into the match, Sidney was 25-0 — including two wins over Katz — and had not dropped a set all season. Katz improved to 14-2 with the win. Gilman coach Jim Busick said Katz's strengths on the court are mental toughness and a strong baseline game.

Others considered: Tyler Frederick, McDonogh, lacrosse; Justin Gross, McDonogh, track; Jawan Parker, Carver, track
