Varsity baseball: Markey leads C.M. Wright over Fallston, 2-0

Brad Markey had a hand in almost every aspect of top-ranked C.Milton Wright's 2-0 victory over No. 8 Fallston Monday.

Markey threw five shutout innings and gave up two hits, retiring the final 13 batters he faced. In addition, the Georgia Tech-bound senior drove in the first run and scored the second to help the visiting Mustangs to a key Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference victory.

The right-hander started on the mound for the first time since the first game of the season. Fallston (6-1, 1-1) got a pair of singles and had two on with two outs in the first. But Markey didn't allow another base-runner, striking out seven and walking none.

He constantly handcuffed the Cougars with a good mix of fastballs and sharp-breaking curves. Markey needed only 62 pitches — 46 of which were strikes — to get through the five innings.

"I just had the mind-set to just come out and throw strikes," Markey said. "My arm got [more] loose as the game went on."

His bat did fine also. He got an RBI ground-out in the first to give C.M. Wright (7-0, 3-0) a 1-0 lead, scoring Andrew Gilley, who led off the game with an infield single.

In the sixth, Markey walked, stole second and went to third on a throwing error before scoring on Ryan Corn's single.

"Death, taxes and Brad Markey playing well — those are three things I can predict are going to happen," C.M. Wright coach Tony Blackburn said. "He works hard at what he does. He's a trememdous athlete."

Tyler Yudiski replaced Markey in the sixth and completed the shutout. He gave up two hits in two innings but used a nasty curveball to freeze Fallston hitters and stay out of trouble.

Fallston starter Taylor Nelson went the distance and scattered seven hits. He escaped problems several times, forcing the Mustangs to strand runners at third base in five innings.

But the Cougars couldn't help him on offense. They finished with t four hits and got just one runner in scoring position.

"[Markey] kept us off-balance, and we just need to hit the ball," Fallston coach Joe Connolly said. "We just didn't do that today."
