Lake Clifton's Josh Selby wins national slam dunk contest

Transferring to Lake Clifton from DeMatha for his senior basketball season, standout guard Josh Selby kept Baltimore City basketball fans on the edge of their seats with rim-rattling dunks, helping him earn All-Metro Player of the Year honors.

On Tuesday night, Selby took his high-flying act to the national stage when he won the 2010 Powerade Jam Fest in Columbus, Ohio. The dunk contest, which featured eight of the top high school players, was part of the McDonald's All-American Game festivities and was broadcasted on ESPN.

Selby was one of four participants to advance to the championship round. On his first attempt in the finals, he made his move to the rim and then put the ball between his legs before coming down with a power jam that scored a perfect 70 points with all seven judges awarding 10s. After scoring a 61 on his second dunk, he won the contest with a combined score of 131.

Throughout the event, the ESPN announcers referred to the 6-foot-3 standout as 'Showcase Selby' and his dynamic performance backed up the tag. He will next participate in the McDonald's All-American Game, set for 8 p.m. Wednesday in Columbus and televised on ESPN.

Selby, who averaged 32 points, seven assists and five rebounds in leading the No. 10 Lakers to a 15-6 mark, was recently named to the Parade All-America high school boys basketball second team, which will appear in the magazine this Sunday. He is still undecided on a college with Arizona, Connecticut, Kansas and Kentucky being considered.
