Girls track: Coach of the Year

Baltimore Sun

Gerard Filosa PikesvilleFilosa has done a good job of making the Pikesville track program competitive, especially on the girls' side.

The Panthers had what might have been the best indoor season in school history. Despite being Class 1A, Pikesville finished second in the Baltimore County championship meet. The Panthers won the Central regional title before finishing fifth in the state.

Filosa, in his seventh year as coach, credited his assistant coaches for playing a significant role in the team's success. Adam Hittner (sprints), Jennifer Slingland (distance) and John Fontinell (throws) spend a lot of their time teaching.

Filosa recruits kids who play sports in other seasons. He calls them his "winter rentals," but they keep the Panthers strong. Filosa knows the sport, having run it in high school in Pennsylvania and in college at Loyola.
