The Washington Mystics signed free agent Katie Smith, whom general manager Angela Taylor called "the LeBron James of this free-agency process" and "the Wilt Chamberlain or the Michael Jordan of the WNBA." Smith, 35, is the third-leading scorer in WNBA history and, when points from the American Basketball League are added in, the highest scorer in U.S. women's professional basketball. The 5-foot-11 guard helped the Detroit Shock win two WNBA championships and was the Most Valuable Player of the 2008 Finals. She missed the last seven games of last season and the playoffs with Detroit because of a herniated disk in her back. In another move Tuesday, Washington re-signed restricted free-agent guard Kristen Haynie.Men's lacrosse: CCBC-Essex (3-0) is No. 1 in the National Junior College Athletic Association's poll after defeating previous-No. 1 Onondaga Community College, 22-19, on Saturday. Anne Arundel (2-0) is ranked fourth, Howard (1-2) ninth and CCBC-Catonsville (2-1) 10th.

Baseball: Washington Nationals first baseman Adam Dunn, who hit 38 home runs last season, left Tuesday's split-squad game against the Florida Marlins after two innings because of a spasm in his lower back. His status is day-to-day.
