Severna Park sweeps 3A/4A team titles at swim meet

Baltimore Sun

Severna Park used the talents of the Lloyd sisters and the depth of its boys to sweep the Class 4A-3A team titles at Saturday's state championship swimming meet at Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center.

Sarah and Emily Lloyd are twin sisters who played a big role in helping the Falcons score 331 points to beat Urbana (300) for their third state title in four years. Emily Lloyd set meet records while winning the 50-yard freestyle (23.16 seconds) and the 200 freestyle (1:52.69). She also swam on the record-setting 200 freestyle relay team (1:39.86).

Her sister, who also swam on that team, finished first in the 100 butterfly (56.52). Sarah Lloyd also helped on the victorious 200 medley relay team (1:54.58) and the second-place 400-relay team, which broke a record despite finishing second to Urbana. She's headed to Princeton to play lacrosse while Emily Lloyd will be swimming at Virginia.

"They've been captains for two years, and they're very humble and gracious," Severna Park coach Mike McTammany said. "I'm going to miss them a lot next year."

The boys finished with 248 points to win the title, beating Thomas Johnson (201) and South River (192) despite not winning a race. The Falcons finished in the top four in seven of the 11 events. Sean Brant's second-place effort in the 100 backstroke was the team's best.

Charlie Melesh of Annapolis also had a big day. The senior set meet records in the 100 butterfly (53.03) and the 200 individual medley (1:57.41) and swam on the school's first-place 200 medley relay team (1:46.08) as the Panthers took fifth place overall.

South River freshman Kyle DeVore won the 200 freestyle (1:52.70) and helped take first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.66). Other boys winners were: Taylor Smith (Broadneck, 500 freestyle, 4:54.13) and Dylan Davis (Annapolis, meet record of 53.90 in the 100 backstroke).

For the girls, C. Milton Wright's Rachel Flint took the 100 freestyle in 54.72.

Class 3A-2A-1ANorth Harford coach Jessica Lewis knew her team was good as it entered the Class 3A-2A-1A state swimming championships. Just how good it was surprised even her.

The Hawks' boys team finished second overall with 259 points. They were overtaken by Walkersville (269 points) down the stretch. The girls team (197 points) made a furious charge but ran out of time and posted a fourth-place finish. It trailed Frederick (238), Middletown (233) and Stephen Decatur (211).

"This has been a year of surprises for me," Lewis said. "I knew we were capable, but I didn't think we'd do as well as we did."

The Hawks were paced by Meredith Foster, who won the girls 100-yard backstroke (1:01.23), and Jesse Rowles, who finished first in the 100 freestyle (54.33) and was the anchor on the first-place 400 freestyle relay team (3:28.33).

"I was seeded fourth going in, and I wanted to believe I could win it," Foster said. "When I hit the wall and realized that I'd won, I was really excited. I just kept pushing."

Rowles was also pleased but said he wished the Hawks had a little more left in the tank.

"I'm a little disappointed with finishing second," Rowles said. "We came so close, and it was really exciting. We just couldn't hold it. I just give credit to Walkersville. They have an excellent team."

The Hawks were ahead until the next-to-last event, but Walkersville took first and third in the 100 breaststroke to pass North Harford in the team standings.

The Frederick boys relay team of Jake Carlsen, Austin Braswell, Connor Eliff and Will Parker broke the only record of the meet, recording a time of 1:32.19. The previous record was set by Huntingtown (1:33.44) last year.

Other local finishers were Fallston's Madison Brown and Austin Appel. Brown won the girls 500 freestyle relay (5:37.84); Appel took the 100 backstroke (57.63).
