Miracle Wood headlines Laurel card; Friday racing canceled

Baltimore Sun

The first leg of the Magna 5 wager takes place today, with 12 3-year-olds racing in the $70,000 Miracle Wood Stakes at Laurel Park. Four winners of the seven-furlong race have gone on to start in a Triple Crown race, including Sweetnorthernsaint (2006), who was the betting favorite in the Kentucky Derby and finished second in the Preakness. Turf Melody, with Sheldon Russell riding, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite. He is trained by Graham Motion. Also running are Dont Blame the Cat (7-2), trained by Hagerstown native Rick Dutrow; Deputy Daney (4-1); Turbo Speed (5-1); Cole T (8-1); Our Commander (10-1); Day Flight (12-1); B'wanagoldmine (20-1); Kens Cape (20-1); Regal Warrior (20-1); Savatron (30-1); and Proud of Midway (30-1). Today's card features nine other races.

Friday: Laurel Park's live racing card was canceled because of high winds. It was the seventh time this year live racing has been canceled at Laurel.
