Baltimore Sun

A new women's soccer team will bring together an impressive collection of talented players this spring. The Chesapeake Charge, guided by Mercy girls coach Albert Oni, will be competing in the Women's Premier Soccer League. A number of former area high school and college standouts have made the roster. The Charge will play a 10-game schedule in the semipro league, with all their home games played at Arundel High's Carroll Field. The team opens its season on the road against the Philadelphia Independence on May 15 and then plays the Jersey Select on May 23 in its home opener. Among the players who have made the roster are Jen Biscoe (John Carroll, Maryland), Kelly Hammond (St. Mary's, Virginia) and Jessica Knight (Perry Hall, Richmond), all of whom earned Baltimore Sun All-Metro Player of the Year honors. Former All-Metro standouts Gigi Mangione (McDonogh, Loyola), Melissa Gomes (John Carroll, Towson), Lisa Zanti (McDonogh, West Virginia) and Cynthia Gamboa (Notre Dame Prep, George Washington) have also committed to the team. The Charge will conduct tryouts to complete its roster from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 6-7 at Arundel High. For more information, go to ChesapeakeCharge.com or call Oni at 410-276-4640.
