Morgan State clinches third straight MEAC title

Kevin Thompson (Walbrook) finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Morgan State men's basketball team as the Bears beat UMES, 65-61, Monday, in Princess Anne.

Thompson shot 7-for-11 from the field for the Bears (21-9, 12-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), who clinched their third straight regular-season conference title. Ameer Ali chipped in with 10 points.

The game was tied at 56 with 1:27 left, but the Hawks were outscored 9-5 the rest of the way as they shot 1-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute.

Tim Burns scored 23 points to lead UMES (9-19, 7-7), which had won its past two games.

Kevin White chipped in with 16 points and seven assists.

Delaware State 59, Coppin State 43: Marques Oliver scored 23 points for the host Hornets (15-10, 10-4).

Oliver, the MEAC Rookie of the Week with 24 points throughout his last two games, was 10-of-14 shooting against the Eagles (7-19, 2-11).

Delaware State held Coppin State to 28.8 percent shooting (15-for-52), including an 0-for-8 effort from 3-point range.

Sam Coleman paced Coppin State with nine points.

Delaware State 53, Coppin State 41: Cortney Crockett scored 12 points and Brittany Washington added eight points and 13 rebounds as the host Hornets (6-21, 4-9 MEAC) beat the Eagles (9-16, 4-9).

Delaware State shot 46.7 percent from the field in the second half, while limiting Coppin State to just 30.8 percent shooting in turning a two-point halftime lead into a 12-point victory.

Coppin State was led by sophomore Crystal Whittington, who scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.

UMES 66, Morgan State 64: ULatoya Buckner scored 15 and Casey Morton had 14 points as the host Hawks (10-14, 7-7 MEAC) held off a late rally by the Bears (14-12, 9-4). The loss ended a three-game winning streak for Morgan State, for which Corin Adams had a game-high 18 points.

Mary Washington 71, St. Mary's 48: The host Eagles' (20-4, 15-1) victory over the Seahawks (9-15, 8-8) secured them a share of the regular-season title Capital Athletic Conference title with Marymount.

St. Mary's Stephanie Saint-Aubin led all scorers with 16 points.

St. Mary's hosts York in Tuesday night's conference tournament first round at 7 p.m.
