No. 2 St. Frances beats No. 3 Calvert Hall in MIAA semis

Baltimore Sun

St. Frances used a 10-0 fourth-quarter run to clinch a 63-51 victory over visiting Calvert Hall in the semifinals of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference tournament Friday night.

The No. 2 Panthers will face No. 1 Mount St. Joseph - 70-30 winners over John Carroll in the other A Conference semifinal - at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at UMBC for the championship.

Shooting guard Wayne Sparrow led the Panthers with 21 points. The Richmond-bound senior also had five rebounds and gave the Cardinals fits with his quickness and aggressive play.

"We're a scrappy team," St. Frances coach Mark Karcher said. "There is no let-up in us, and we play all four quarters. I told the guys not to get discouraged, and eventually we got comfortable with the way the game was going."

St. Frances point guard R.J. Williams scored just two points but was key in setting up the offense and creating opportunities for his teammates, finishing with 11 assists. Sam Cassell Jr. scored 14 for the Panthers, Dante Holmes added 12 and Greg Lewis scored nine of his 10 points in the second half.

Calvert Hall led 29-27 at the break thanks to a powerful inside attack led by seniors Jonathan Graham, Donya Jackson and Damion Lee. Graham recorded a double double with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Cardinals. Lee and Jackson added 15 points apiece.

Despite a significant size disadvantage, St. Frances dictated the pace of play all night.

"The key for us is defense and rebounding. That's it," Sparrow said. "We always play hard and give it 110 percent for all four quarters, and that's all that matters."
