For almost two decades, Western has dominated the Baltimore City indoor track championships.
But the No. 5 Digital Harbor girls put an end to the No. 4 Doves' 18-year winning streak Friday at the 5th Regiment Armory, claiming a 131-116 victory.
There was also a little history on the boys' side, as Carver won the team title for the first time. The Bears finished with 95 points, beating Edmondson (81).
Alyssa McClure, Regina Summerville and Chelsea Walker led the way for Digital Harbor. McClure won the 55-meter dash, the 300 and the 500. Summerville captured the 3,200, took second in the 1,600 and ran on the second-place 1,600 relay team. Walker took second in the 55, third in the 300 and ran on the winning 800-relay team.
"What we focus on is running faster times," said Rams coach Lutalo Bakari, who implemented a new strength and conditioning program for his team before the season. "Our focus was on having times on a national scale instead of local, and it worked."
McClure has the best time in the nation in the 55 this winter (6.96 seconds), and she posted a 7.15 for this victory, edging Walker (7.25). Inez Smith also got a win for the Rams in the shot put (33-1).
Western got a win from Brinae Robinson in the 1,600 (5:41.8). She also took fourth in the 500 but fainted during the 3,200. That kept her from scoring there and in the 800 later. The Doves also won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays and got Ajada Thomas' victory in the high jump (5-0).
"We didn't have everything go as planned tonight," Western coach Alicia Williams said. "But we know how to bounce back."
Jawan Parker sparked Carver with wins in the 55 (6.74) and 300 (38.6). He also ran the anchor leg on the victorious 800 relay team (1:37.3).
Tavon Barnes (high jump, 5 feet, 10 inches) and Bernard Brandford (shot put, 43-11) gave Carver a pair of crucial late victories.
"We're a complete track team," Carver coach Stephen Kimes said.
"That's what it's going to take [at the] states."
Kenneth Johnson won the 1,600 (4:58.2) and 3,200 (10:53.9) to help Edmondson take second.
