Weather shuts down team travel

Baltimore Sun

Bad weather forced No. 18 Mississippi to postpone its game against Arkansas that was scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

The game will instead be played Sunday night in Oxford, Miss.

A winter weather system was passing through the mid-South on Friday, bringing snow and ice and making it difficult for Arkansas to travel to Mississippi.

The winter weather that shut down Oklahoma City's airport also grounded the Oklahoma and Oklahoma State teams.

Oklahoma State is scheduled to play at Missouri and Oklahoma is to play at Nebraska on Saturday.

Oklahoma State spokesman Mike Noteware said it took two hours for the team to make a 70-mile bus trip from Stillwater to Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma spokesman Mike Houck said the start time for Oklahoma's men's game at Nebraska and women's game at Texas Tech both were moved back several hours to 7 p.m. Central.

•North Carolina-Wilmington coach Benny Moss, who went 41-74 in four seasons, has been reassigned within the athletic department. Athletic director Kelly Mehrtens said Friday assistant Brooks Lee will take over on an interim basis.

•The NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee heard Memphis' argument Friday for leniency in a closed hearing in Indianapolis and now must wait until the report is released in 4 to 6 weeks. Memphis argued in papers filed with the NCAA that the school was improperly held responsible for an ineligible player despite the NCAA's clearinghouse checking his eligibility twice.
