Navy men's lacrosse team favored to win Patriot again

Baltimore Sun

The Navy men's lacrosse team was voted the preseason favorite to win the Patriot League championship. The Midshipmen have won at least a share of the regular-season Patriot League title in five of the six seasons they have been in the conference. Navy secured 11 of the 14 first-place votes (they were eligible for only 12 because schools could not vote for themselves). Bucknell accounted for the remaining three first-place votes. Mids long-stick defensive midfielder Jaren Woeppel, a two-time All-Patriot League selection, was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

More men's lacrosse: Providence announced its 2014 recruiting class, which includes attackman Adam MacBride (Severna Park) and midfielder Andrew Barton (St. Paul's).

Women's lacrosse: Mount St. Mary's was picked fifth in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Two-time defending champion Sacred Heart was selected as the favorite.

Softball: Towson, which has seven starters back from last season's 34-22 team, finished first in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll, receiving 45 points compared with 43 for runner-up Hofstra.

Football: Former Frostburg State assistant Ernie McCook was named assistant head coach/offensive coordinator at Shepherd.

Gymnastics: Towson senior Alise McDonald (Randallstown) and sophomore Avis Hixon were named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Gymnast of the Week and Specialist of the Week, respectively.
