Western sloppy in lopsided loss to Riverdale Baptist

Baltimore Sun

Even though the holiday season is over, third-ranked Western found itself in a very giving mood Friday night. Unfortunately for the Doves, Riverdale Baptist was more than willing to take.

The Crusaders (13-5) built a 17-6 first-quarter lead and Western never fully recovered, dropping a 78-50 decision in the 14th annual Basketball Academy at Morgan State.

The Doves (6-5) committed an uncharacteristic 27 turnovers and shot 10-for-22 from the free-throw line in the loss.

"We rushed a lot of our passes, and we could have decreased the turnovers if we'd have come to the ball more," said Western guard Tenicia Spence, who led the Doves with 12 points. "We played hard at times, but we didn't match their intensity. They just wanted it more."

Riverdale Baptist guard Lauren Chase led all scorers with 25 points.

The Doves used a layup by Infiniti Alston with 6:04 left in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Crusaders scored the next 10 points to run out to a 13-2 lead. The Doves, through either their turnovers or missed shots, were held scoreless six straight times down the court, forcing coach Tiffany Silver to call a timeout with 1:36 left in the quarter.

Western used a free throw by Alston to cut the margin to seven, 22-15, midway through the second quarter, but a 3-pointer by Riverdale Baptist's Tyonna Williams with 2:46 ran the lead back to 10, 25-15. The Doves outscored the Crusaders 10-7 to close out the half, trailing by seven at 32-25.

The third quarter was all Riverdale Baptist, as the Crusaders outscored Western 25-14 to take a 57-39 lead and put the game out of reach.

"We didn't take care of the ball very well," Silver said. "We'd force them to miss shots, and we'd go down the court and just give it away. That's very uncharacteristic for us."

Alston, while giving Riverdale Baptist credit, said the Doves were their own worst enemy.

"They had a higher intensity level and kept it going throughout the game," Alston said. "They got the lead and just kept building on it."

Silver said the Doves will learn from the loss and move forward.

"I'm not disappointed with the effort they gave, but I am disappointed in the way we played," Silver said. "It was like we were in the twilight zone. They showed us absolutely nothing new, nothing we hadn't seen before. With the way we played, we should have lost by 50."

No. 10 City 72, Milford Mill 48: LaShay Taft scored 25 points and Jumanah Giles added 12 as the Knights (8-3) defeated the Millers (10-4).

Milford Mill was led by Desiree Carr's 17 points.

Taft's 58 points in two games (she scored 33 against Perry Hall on Thursday) set a two-game scoring record for a girls player at the tournament.
