Boys Athlete of the Week // Justin Gross, McDonogh, track and field

Justin Gross, McDonogh, track and field

The Eagles' senior captain set a meet record at the Montgomery Invitational in Landover on Saturday while turning in the second-best long jump in the nation this year (23 feet, 6 inches). He was also second in the 55-meter high hurdles, finishing in 7.63 seconds, the 10th-fastest time in the nation this year. Both performances qualify Gross, 5 feet 9 and 150 pounds, for the Nike National Meet in Boston in March. "Usually in the hurdles, the best competitors are 6-2 or 6-3, but Justin is such a good technician and he's fast as can be," Eagles coach Jeff Sanborn said. Gross, 17, plans to compete as a decathlete in college.

Others considered:

Robby Creese, track and field, Glenelg; Brian Richardson, wrestling, Owings Mills; Curtis Taylor, wrestling, South River; Davon Usher, basketball, Digital Harbor; Tyler Washington, basketball, Arundel
