Morgan State beats Hampton, 73-63

Reggie Holmes (St. Frances) scored 16 points and Morgan State defeated Hampton, 73-63, Monday night in Hampton, Va.

Holmes, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's leading scorer (23.6 points per game) was 4-for-18 from the field, including 3-for-9 from 3-point range.

The Bears (10-7, 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) led 57-56 with 7:47 left to play before going on a 12-2 run. Sean Thomas capped the spurt on two free throws for a 69-58 lead with four minutes to go.

Troy Smith and Kevin Thompson (Walbrook) scored 11 points each, and DeWayne Jackson added 10 for Morgan State.

Smith had 10 points in the first half for the Bears.

The Pirates (4-11, 1-2) trailed 29-28 with 5:57 left in the first half, but went on a 10-3 run to lead 38-32 at halftime.

Charles Funches scored 17 points for Hampton, Darrion Pellum had 13 and Vincent Simpson and Michael Freeman added 12 each.

Howard 59, Coppin State 53: Dadrain Collins scored 18 points and the host Bison beat the Eagles.

Calvin Thompson added a double double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Paul Kirkpatrick had 10 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.

Howard (3-14, 2-1 MEAC), which allowed its lowest point total of the season, had been giving up 73.8 points per game.

Coppin State, playing its sixth of eight straight road games, lost its sixth game in a row. The Eagles are 1-8 away from home this season.

Howard led 32-20 at halftime and held its largest lead of eight points in the final seconds. The were five ties and 10 lead changes in the game.

Sam Coleman came off the bench to lead the Eagles (5-9, 1-2) with 14 points. Michael Harper added 13 points and Vince Goldsberry had 12.

Iona 59, Loyola 50: Rashard McGill scored six of his 12 points in a key second-half run to help the visiting Gaels defeat the Greyhounds.

Leading 39-37 with 3:18 to go, the Greyhounds (11-6, 3-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) used strong defensive play to spark a 14-4 run, lasting almost 12 minutes.

Iona forced eight turnovers and held Loyola (8-8, 1-5) to 1-for-10 shooting from the field during the spurt.

Rashon Dwight capped the run on two free throws for a 53-41 lead with 3:18 left to play. Kyle Smith scored 12 points, Alejo Rodriguez had 11 and Dwight finished with 10 for the Gaels.

Iona forced 22 turnovers and held the Greyhounds to 38.1 percent shooting on 16-for-42.

Brian Rudolph and Anthony Winbush scored 13 points each for Loyola, which out-rebounded Iona 39-31. The Greyhounds' Julius Brooks blocked a career-high four shots.

Winston-Salem State 75, UMES 70: Marcus Wells scored 14 points to lead the visiting Rams past the Hawks.

Paul Davis added 12 points and nine rebounds for Winston-Salem (4-9), which leads the all-time series against UMES 8-1. Lamar Monger chipped in with 13 points.

The Rams took their largest lead of the game with a 12-1 run that gave them a 50-35 lead with 15:09 remaining. A separate 7-0 run with 7:45 remaining gave them a 57-46 lead, and the Hawks (3-12) would get no closer than within three points the rest of the contest.

Tim Burns scored 17 to lead UMES, which has lost seven straight. Hillary Haley added 16 points, while Neal Pitt finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hawks outrebounded the Rams 48-35.
